Mid-week Linkspam.

If you want to see the first official photos from the upcoming X-Men: First Class film, here they are.

Really, though, there are only three things that you need to know about this film:

1. It is going to be 60'S FABULOUS.

2. The main villain will be Sebastian Shaw, who is played by The Goddamn Kevin Bacon.

3. Alex Summers is supposed to be one of the main characters.

There's already some headdesk-worthy crap coming out of the film - namely the producers repeatedly stating that they based Magneto's character arc on the beliefs of Malcom X (really? really?!) and January Jones kvetching to the LA Times that the initial costume designs for Emma Frost were ridiculously, stupidly sexist - but other than that, it looks like it's shaping up to be an awesome movie.

Speaking of comics stufff, here is a comics-themed Zodiac. I'm a Bulbasaur.

And finally, the world's first Sanskrit Book Fair was held in Bangalore last week. Well, that only took four millennium to get off the ground.

AHAHAHA, I AM THERE WITH BELLS ON.

(When have Emma's costumes not been there for the fanboys? Admittedly, I'm not really up on my Emma Frost mythos, and I realize that her tendency toward bustiers and garters has probably been re-invented as Woman Reclaiming Sexual Freedom, but she's always been all about the skin, as far as I remember. Could January Jones be kvetching about something that Emma would just normally wear every day anyway? Just curious. Also, WTF Malcom X?)

Emma's costumes have always been sexed-up, but they've varied pretty wildly in the amount of actual skin that they leave exposed. Her original appearance in the 70's was pretty covered-up, actually - yeah, she was wearing underwear, but it was underwear that covered most of her body, and half of the time she was completely wrapped in her gigantic cloak of doom anyway. Apparently the movie initially tried to abandon the "sexed-up-but-not-overexposed" costumes for, well, boob-bandaids.

There's also the fact that maaaaaybe it's possible to get away with certain costumes in a comic book, but once you try to re-create that costume IRL and put it on a flesh-and-blood person, now it just looks insanely ridiculous.

I much prefer the outfit that Emma's wearing in the photos.

Oh, well boob tape is pretty ridiculous, and pretty much no live-action film adaptation of comics/cartoons (that I'm aware of) has been able to pull off real-life versions of the physics-defying, eye-searing costumes from those genres. They just look silly (or don't function) IRL - something I'm glad they realized when the X-Men movies came out.

Anyway, I also like Emma's costume. It's still very Emma Frost, but not laughable.
