Wait, I missed something here.

So apparently there was a little bit of Pirates of the Caribbean III that was shown after the credits finished rolling.

I did not know this, because the theater that I saw the movie in did not show this part. Stoopid Japanese theaters.

No, seriously. I *expected* there to be something after the credits, because there was something after the credits for the first two movies, so... We stayed all the way through the credits, but then said credits cut off quickly in the middle of the "Special Thanks to" section. I didn't think anything of it at the time, I just thought that the movie was over. I mean, we knew that the credits were cut off early for some reason, but... I dunno, we just sort of up and left after that. I guess we assumed, or at least I assumed, that since the credits were cut off early, we weren't missing anything particularly important. Only after I was browsing my flist today and saw people writing about what happened after the credits did I realize... We were robbed! Argh! Fortunately, the "after the credits" bit has already been posted all over Youtube, so I was able to see it that way. Okay.

Also, I found out (via [livejournal.com profile] tricianna's journal and Wikipedia) that there was a scene cut from the film that totally changes the ending:

Apparently, if the captain of the Flying Dutchman finds his true love waiting for him when he returns to shore after the first ten years, his curse will be lifted. (If he's stood up, however, his curse will be eternal, which is what happened to Davey Jones.) Thus, the after-the-credits scene shows Will not only returning to Elizabeth for *one day*, but basically returning to the world of the living permanently. Because his curse is broken. D'awwwwwwww!

[livejournal.com profile] novel_tea, what was that you said about a non-Disneyfied ending? ;)

But now the question remains, who gets to become the next captain of the Flying Dutchman? It should probably be one of the crew members who's already dead, one would hope...

ETA: Wikipedia lists the names of all nine Pirate Lords and which seas they're the lords of. Apparently Barbossa is the Lord of the Caspian Sea, and Jack is the Lord of the Caribbean Sea.

...Really? The Caspian Sea?! Now I am more curious than ever as to how Barbossa got this title.

ETA 2: The first Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack was good, but nothing special. The second was a freakin' masterpiece. And the third? OMG I'm listening to it now, AND IT IS AMAZING. I'm very picky about my movie soundtracks, and it's extremely rare that I'll find one that I can listen to, in its entirety, over and over again without ever getting sick of it. I've been listening to the PoC II soundtrack over and over again *for a year* without getting sick of it, which really says something. Except that now PoC III has officially bumped PoC II out of its sacred spot as Nenena's All-Time Favorite Movie Soundtrack. So in short? GOOD SOUNTRACK.

Caspian Sea? Barbossa deserves something bigger, imho. And I'm also curious how he got this title. I doubt there were pirates in the Caspian Sea at all.

But Caspian Sea is a misnamed lake! How on Earth is that supposed to work?
I don't know why but I find this absolutely hilarious. I love this movie because it doesn't even need to concern itself with such silly things and logic, geography and whatnot.

It works because Barbossa makes it work. HE IS THAT AWESOME.

Yeah, it's kinda implied that the curse will be lifted. But how? Does will get his heart back? It's been said that the Dutchman must have a captain at all times, and the only way the movie shows that this is able to happen is that someone kills the old captain and takes his place. So Will, unless his heart is stabinated by someone else, will remain immortal? Will they put back his heart and he's fine? But then how is the next captain chosen? Because they were very clear about the importance of ferrying the lost souls around on the Dutchman.

Really, that ending left me with more questions than answers.

Yeah, I didn't really take it as an "all better now!" ending, but more of a "they'll be faithful even if they only meet every 10 years" kinda thing. Which, when you think about it, sucks for the kid, who will only see his dad for one day when he's 10 and one day when he's 20 and so on....

And ditto [livejournal.com profile] meiousei's questions.

From what I've read online, and what I've read of the screenplay, the intended ending was for Will to return back to life as a normal human. Which, you're right, is a bizarre logical contradiction that flies in the face of everything established in the previous two-and-a-half hours of the movie. But like [livejournal.com profile] aster_dw said, this movie does not seem particularly concerned with, er, logic.

I guess it's kind of open-ended, then. I mean, if we - pretty intelligent movie-viewers - find the ending kind of confusing, there's not much to do but sit around and debate. I prefer to think of it as a tragic story because I think that's way more poetic and awesome, but I'm okay with the "Will lives as a mortal once again!" theory. Except now Elizabeth's 10 years older than he is? Hmm.

First off, Barbarossa's the absolute bomb, scene-stealer that he is. I love the marriage scene, I love every scene he's in! Now that I got that OOTW, re the extra scene, it was confusing, but only mildly so. I just figured they got to see one another every 10 years and I didn't worry about it too much. It would be nice if Will's back, but it was still a satisfying ending. There were ony 3 of us still left in the theatre BTW when that came on - everyone else had already left. Sillies! Plot-wise, this was based on a ride at Disney, so I never expected much depth anyway and don't care if it has it or not. It was more than watchable, the SF were excellent and the guys were thrilling hot 'n wet or thrillingly dead. JMHO.
