Look! It's a meme!

1. Comment with "the odds are ever in your favor."
2. I will give you a letter.
3. Post the names of five fictional characters and your thoughts on each.

[livejournal.com profile] redbrunja gave me M.

Maka Albarn: Hands down, the number one reason why Soul Eater is as good as it is (when it is good, that is). She's a complex, layered female character who is FUCKING BADASS and happens to be the starring character in a combat shounen series. You don't see that many leading ladies in combat-oriented shounen manga unless they're spectacularly boobalicious or intended to be pure cheesecake; Maka, thankfully, is neither. Albeit this is largely because Ohkubo reserves his boobs and fanservice for the supporting female characters, but as far as I'm concerned that in no way detracts from the awesomeness of Maka herself.

Megan: For those of you who don't know, Megan was the original human character in the G1 My Little Pony series. She was intended to be the obvious self-insert character for all of the little girls watching the show: an ordinary human girl swept into the magical world of Ponyland who gets to befriend talking ponies, live among them, and - more often than not - become their hero. And she was fucking badass. What a lot of people looking back at the G1 series tend to miss is that little girls back then didn't want to be Megan just because she got to hang out with magical ponies and ride on the backs of the pegasus ponies or swim with the seaponies. No. We wanted to be Megan because she was a straight-up empowerment fantasy. When Firefly originally dragged Megan into Ponyland and charged her with the task of defending the ponies from the evil Tyrac, Megan was so overwhelmed and shocked that she actually sang a song about how she thought she couldn't do it. Five minutes later, faced with mortal danger and the loss of two of her new pony friends, Megan found her courage and attempted to punch a fucking dragon. From that moment forward and through to the end of the series, Megan was the BOSS. She was an ordinary person who regularly accomplished extraordinary, heroic feats and all of the ponies consistently lauded her as being their savior and hero. Nearly every episode in the second season of the G1 cartoon begins with something Really Bad happening, followed immediately by one of ponies or Spike declaring "We have to get Megan! She'll know what to do!" And then Megan would save the day. Which is exactly why little girls loved Megan so much: not because she was an obvious self-insert character who got to live among the ponies in Ponyland, but because she was an obvious self-insert character who was a GODDAMN HERO.

Minako Aino: Still my favorite Sailor Moon character after all of these years. Which is really saying something, because when I first started watching the Sailor Moon anime - the dubbed version shown on Cartoon Network, that is - I thought that "Mina" was hands-down the most boring of all of the main characters. Then I started reading the original manga, and I was introduced to a whole different Minako. And I loved this character. I loved her even more when I finally figured out how to order fansubbed VHS tapes via this wonderful new thing called The Internet and was able to watch the third, fourth, and fifth seasons of the anime with the original Japanese dialogue. Minako somehow managed to be both the most consistently hilarious of the Sailor Senshi and also the most consistently badass, even if her badassery was often displayed on more subtle ways than what Makoto or the Outer Senshi displayed. Add to that the fact that Minako was also the most consistently tragic of the core characters in the manga (because yes, a character can be both a source of comic relief and source of deep angst at the same time) and I was completely sold on her. Still am.

Moonstar/Mirage: Dani has always been one of my favorites among the second generation of the X-Men and is definitely my favorite among the girl characters. I could sing praises forever about how fierce and courageous Dani was in the face of danger and yet how she also showed moments of fear and vulnerability that made her so much more relatable and realistic than many other "teen superhero" characters are. I still love the story about how, as a very young girl freshly enrolled in the Xavier Institute, Dani was absolutely terrified of the Danger Room. Yet she found the strength to face her fears and kick the Danger Room's ass anyway. At the time, this was kind of a revolutionary storyline for the X-Men comics: after all, no other writers had ever before considered the possibility that even a very brave child's natural reaction to being faced with a three-story-tall holographic T-Rex about to bite their head off might actually be mortal terror instead of the usual "YAY I CAN USE MY SUPERPOWERS ON THIS THING!" reaction that most of the kid!X-Men characters had when they trained in the Danger Room for the first time. Yet Dani was terrified. And her terror felt utterly real and utterly believable - which in turn meant that the climax of the story, when Dani found her courage and fought against the Danger Room despite her fear, all that much more satisfying. No, not just satisfying. It was KICKASS.

Mulder: Once upon a time, I really loved The X-Files. I really, really, really loved it. Mulder and Scully were totally my heroes. I think that they were both idiots in their own ways, but they were idiots whom it was great fun to watch interact with each other. I don't think there's a whole lot I can say here to describe how awesome Mulder was, how awesome Scully was, or how doubly awesome they were together. Although I openly admit that a great deal of the appeal of Mulder the character had to do with the appeal of David Duchovny the actor. And I do still love David Duchovny to pieces. I remember once watching an episode of Dr. Katz (back when I was probably waaaaaay too young to be watching that show) just because David Duchovny was the guest star for that week's particular episode. Most of the episode consisted of a running gag in which Duchovny was attempting to masturbate in his therapist's office, and back when I was in middle school I thought that this was the funniest thing that I had ever seen. Add to that Duchovny's appearance mocking himself on The Simpsons in the same year, and I think I might have actually fallen a little bit in love. Well, as much in love as a seventh-grader can be with a nerdy celebrity. I love a funny guy who isn't afraid to make fun of himself, and that is exactly what made Mulder - and the best episodes of the X-Files, which in my opinion were always the deliberately funny ones - so entertaining to watch.

I'd never thought you'd be the type to like Minako! I always thought you'd probably like someone like Rei more!

Oh, I love Rei to death. :) But I really have a thing for over-the-top wacky characters who also have a deep side, so Minako is definitely my favorite in that sense.

Oh, and your letter! D

Agreeing 100% on Maka. Always I happen to watch some of the big three shonens I realize how different Maka is from those usually helpeless secondary females and how different that single factor makes SE.

I cannot express how much love I have for Maka.

She's a complex, layered female character who is FUCKING BADASS and happens to be the starring character in a combat shounen series.

Word. She (and the Soul Eater manga) are one of the things I point when I wanted to argue about how much better other manga could be.

Ah, I was always very fond of Mina as a child, though the dubbed version since it was somewhat of my first introduction to anime. Might start digging around for the manga version since you've piqued my curiosity.

Also, fuck yeah Mulder and Scully + Maka.
