Postcards for Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman is

1) awesome, and

2) the only female comic book character to have had her monthly comic book series more-or-less uninterrupted since 1941.

That's a pretty big freakin' deal.

Not that most of us would know that, of course, since Wonder Woman has been re-numbered at least twice (possibly more than twice?) over the years. But anywhoo, the upcoming issue #45 of Wonder Woman is actually going to be the six hundredth issue of her series (!!!!). And, in recognition of this utterly-amazing-when-you-stop-and-think-about-it anniversary, some fans have asked Dan Didio to please re-number WW #45 as WW #600, in order to give Diana the recognition that she deserves. DC has repeatedly stated that they consider Wonder Woman an iconic character on the same level as Superman or Batman. And, well, Superman got his monthly Action Comics title re-numbered specifically to recognize his milestone anniversaries, so doesn't Wonder Woman deserve the same?

Thus Didio said, "Send me six hundred postcards, and I'll make it so."

And boy, did he get postcards. Here's the official weekly tally so far. But there aren't six hundred yet. We still need moar!

So if you have a postcard, a stamp, and thirty seconds of free time, please consider helping out. Send a postcard with "Wonder Woman issue #45 should be renumbered #600" or some similar message to:

WONDER WOMAN #600
c/o Dan DiDio

(No, I don't have a Wonder Woman icon, so here's some Devi for y'all instead.)

Thank you for posting about this.

I was asked why he's even bothering to do this, since if he says it, it will happen. But that's exactly why. It's a business tactic.

Because the comic industry is finicky, DC only stays afloat right now because Warner Brothers pays their bills. Or is that Marvel? Either way, it's a similar situation. But if you say 'do this' then you know they're serious and it's not just a few fans and nobody will even care. Two, it's a publicity stunt. I can guarantee they'll get three times the buys for that issue, at least, because of this. Because 'the fans won'.

I wouldn't know the numbering without this, despite the carton of over 300 comics in my bedroom. (A small amount). But now I'll send a postcard and I'll dig out the money to buy a carton of copies on eBay, just like I did with other penultimate issues, because those do rise in value and only cost $20 a carton or less. I have a few that I bought 5 years ago, a dollar an issue. Now they sell for 5. In a few more years, it'll be 20. Etc.

You can bet I'll be giving some out, too. I wouldn't do any of this if I didn't know, or if it didn't even say. If an issue says #45 and #600 tiny under it, that doesn't matter nearly as much.

I was asked why he's even bothering to do this, since if he says it, it will happen.

Knowing Didio, actually, I think that he's going to stay literally true to his word. If he doesn't get 600 postcards, it won't happen. He's been speaking out vehemently against the re-numbering since June this year, but only recently reneged his position on the condition that he get 600 postcards to convince him otherwise.

But, even if it is just a publicity stunt and a business tactic, I still don't see anything wrong with it. Publicity stunts and business tactics can be fun to participate in, and this one definitely is!

Oh, I didn't mean to come across thinking that these were bad things. I think it's smart, even if it was only a recent thing on his part. Why was he against the numbering to begin with?

His argument basically boiled down to "the numbering doesn't matter and people know that WW is awesome even without it." Which, yes to the second part, but not so much yes to the first part. A high issue number has always been considered a mark of iconic status and marketing respect; especially in the case of a landmark issue like #600. And again: They made the change for Superman, so why not Wonder Woman?

But Didio changed his tune in last month's DC Nation column, so clearly he is open to listening to his fans. :)

I've ever only read maybe one Wonder Woman story, but I happen to have an extra stamp in my wallet so I'll drop a postcard in the mail after work :)

Thanks for the heads up! I didn't even know, and will admit that I've barely touched any WW comics.

Totally be sending out a postcard though.

Personally, I think he should either do it, or don't do it. When it happened with Star Trek and Jericho, that was a spontaneous fan thing to unexpecting execs. Here we have a guy who is basically now threatening us so he can have a manufactured "fan outpouring" (and I'm not saying we WOULDN'T have done this if somebody had thought about it and Didio was deadset against it) and a PR thing... it bothers me... not the fans, not the ppl who want to do it, or are excited to do it, cuz I am too.. I ttlly think that WW 600 should be numbered that, why wouldn't it be? What bothers me is that DIDIO thought about it and instead of DOING it, is like "well wouldn't this be nice? well you might get it, if you do something for me..."

I get that it's business, but b/c it's manufactured, it doesn't feel the same to me as other stuff like Star Trek and Jericho and etc... :| (AGAIN, I'm not saying that I think nebody who participates or who thinks that renumbering WW or who wants to show their love for WW, is wrong, or stupid or NETHING, I think the passion is real... this is about Didio)

I think we should send him phyllo or something >.>

Actually, I'm pretty sure that a fan came up with the postcard idea first. I remember reading a blog post about it waaaay back in June or July, while I was still in Japan. I wonder if I can find the link on WFA... But anywhoo, it's more like some fans said "maybe 600 postcards would be enough to sway Didio" and then Didio said "NO NO NO I WILL NOT BE SWAYED oh all right if it really matters that much to you, then do it!" Which hey, you're right, it's like a ready-made publicity stunt on his part. I can't really disagree with anything else you said. ^^;; It would be better if we didn't have to jump through hoops to get WW a re-numbering that she deserves anyway.

I didn't know Didio didn't come up with it since I only heard about it in this post, and it sounded like he came up with the idea.

I guess it's the age we live in now, esp in the comics community where the creators often read what fans say online... but it just feels.. like wrestling... like Didio heard about it and kinda wished that he didn't and it would all happen and it would be great and he's like "we can set that up!" but it's not the same :\

[identity profile] lost-angelwings.livejournal.com 2009-10-09 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I meant that I just interpreted it and assumed that he came up with the idea. I'm not implying that it's your fault for my misunderstanding or nething :\ I was just explaining why I thought it was him.
