My totally white Avatar cast, let me show you it.

What the hell, M. Night Shyamalan?

What. The. Hell.

See also: 21, Wanted, The Prince of Persia, the Dragonball movie, and Speed Racer. Just off the top of my head and in the last year alone.

What the hell, world?

What. The. Hell.

Edit: Letter-Writing Campaign, GO!!!

I still think we're being had.

I will gladly, gladly eat my left shoe if this indeed turns out to be some sort of joke.

But I kind of doubt it.

[identity profile] neocloud9.livejournal.com 2008-12-11 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
I guess I just expected different from Shyamalan...

I did, too.

Which is part of why this is all so upsetting.

Aww.

[identity profile] keiichi-chan.livejournal.com 2008-12-11 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
I'm surprised and yet, not surprised.
As soon as I saw a movie add for the Last "Samurai" starring TOM CRUISE, I gave up on Hollywood having any letting of fairness or diversity.

[identity profile] philippos42.livejournal.com 2008-12-11 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
To be fair, Tom was not the titular Samurai in that.

Makes me think that the plans of having an all-Asian cast for the live-action Evangelion movie are bullcrap.

HATE RAGE HATE

[identity profile] peachyindeed.livejournal.com 2008-12-11 09:19 am (UTC)(link)
WHERE IS MY STEREOTYPICAL ASIAN KUNG FU KID? And since we're on the topic, where's the Mexican kids as the glacial Water Tribe?

I'd rather they play the race card wrong than not use it at all. Avatar managed to do diversity without making their cast feel like token non-white characters. Using an all white cast will make the cultural differences seem so hockey. I can only imagine the disappointment kids will feel when their favorite characters lose their tans.

[identity profile] volkner.livejournal.com 2008-12-11 09:54 am (UTC)(link)
LOL, I READ THAT JESSE MCCARTNEY IS PLAYING ZUKO.

oh god it's the end of the world

UGH

UGH

I also hate the inevitable (it's alrdy started) deluge of white ppl saying "oh but it's not set on Earth!" and "oh they're animated! you dunno that they're Asian!" and etc..

it's the "everybody is white until proven guilty in a court of fandom" thing :\ shouldn't it be up to THEM to prove why they think these chars are white, not just "oh well it's not 100% that they're NOT white, so therefore we should go with white as default"

Their is actually a letter writing campaign going on if that makes you feel any better :/

That makes me feel much better, actually. Thanks for the link! I've just edited the post to include it.

Ah, give it up. There are no white people in Avatar, but like 90% of the actors in Hollywood (and elsewhere), and even a higher percentage of the young actors, are white. What do you expect? ^_^

As for Dragonball, I got no problem with the way they cast it. Piccolo is race-neutral, and in a rubber mask, to boot, nearly all the other named characters are being played by Asians (Bulma is white, and correctly so, although her hair should be all blue) and by Hollywood law, the lead male must be either white or black, unless "Harold and Kumar" is somewhere in the title. We should all just be happy that Goku isn't being played by that Shia guy from Transformers. Talk about overexposure...

Of course, as bad as Dragonball is looking to be, the ethnicities of its actors should probably be the least of its fans' worries....

You must be new here.

Hmmm, made-up statistics smell like bullshit.

Well, I only got three (http://community.livejournal.com/deadbrowalking/315016.html) Bingo spaces (http://community.livejournal.com/capslock_atla/823264.html) from your comment. Oh, boo. Everybody loses.

[identity profile] darth-maivia.livejournal.com 2008-12-14 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL at bingo... ^_^ Not new here, but fairly inactive on LJ, usually. Saw a Soul Eater spoiler link on Animesuki, and while there was a fair bit of the fangirlsquee expected from an LJ account,it's more than tempered by some interesting discussion. And those weren't made up statistics, they were exaggerated statistics. Still BS, of course. Don't see why anyone would expect to see a multicultural cast from this movie. I think there have been more positive white characters in Spike Lee movies than there have been non-white characters in Shyamalan's movies.

By "here" I meant in my livejournal specifically, where we do enjoy having intelligent debate and discussion, but in general there's a low tolerance for headdesk-inducing fail.

Like so:

Don't see why anyone would expect to see a multicultural cast from this movie.

*headdesk*

Yare, yare... I agree with you that the Avatar cast should be multicultural, I just think that expecting it to be is naive, considering the oft-proven lack of color in the movie industry ("21, Wanted, The Prince of Persia, the Dragonball movie, and Speed Racer", remember?). You can't expect a leopard to change his spots this quickly. How long did it take them to make movies with black leads where the whole point of the movie wasn't centered around it being a black lead?

The sad truth is that in Hollywood's eyes, the largest money-producing demographic, and thus their default movie-goer, is a white male, ages 18-24 (I'm about 12 years outside that, btw), and outside of certain genres (chick flick, "urban" movie, martial arts movie, etc.) that have different expectations and demographics (and thus their own inflexible "rules"), "18-24 white male" is the lens that they view their creative process through, since they assume that the "default movie-goer" won't relate (read: go see the movie and spend money) if he doesn't see "himself" on the screen. This is why the new Star Trek has gone "back to school", so to speak, and why nearly any popular adaptation or remake (Avatar, Dragonball, Speed Racer, etc.) is going to have a white male lead (or Will Smith), independent of the source material. I'm not defending it. It's stupid, short-sighted, and born from an elitist worldview. But that's just the way movies are made. It's a business, and the only brilliance comes about by happy accident.
ext_6355: (Devi - WTF?!)

[identity profile] nenena.livejournal.com 2008-12-15 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I've got my bingo! On both cards.

You just wasted a lot of words getting out nothing more than a classic is-ought fallacy.

Your comment. Your comment, and people who think like you, is the reason WHY we're stuck with this "stupid, short-sighted, and elitist" casting decision. Oh and it's fucking racist, too.

If you're really not interested in defending it, then stop defending it.

I'd suggest you do some more reading up on this issue, particularly the posts linked here (http://nenena.livejournal.com/188361.html), before you open your fool mouth and try to contribute your opinion anywhere again.

Ah, there seems to be a miscommunication here. I've taken a closer look around here, and while I was always taught that "intelligent debate and discussion" means a free exchange of ideas, I see that you were taught that it means "parrot the views of the blogger".

Change, real change, which appears to be what you are rightly after on this issue, is not going to be done by petitions, or overbearing ranting, or snuffing out any perceived dissenting voice, but by understanding and discussion of the issue, support of the producers/directors/etc. that are getting it right, and, for those that have the opportunity, putting out movies that break the cycle.

Unfortunately, only one option is keyed to feeding egos. Now that I see how you do things around here, I see the voice coming from my "fool mouth" will be better put to use elsewhere. I apologize for the inconvenience.

Thank you for the Soul Eater synopses/info, by the way. They are the reason I initially came here, and an informative resource I intend to continue using. I think I can probably stomach this site once a month. GOOD. DAY.

1. If you'd actually taken a look around here, you would have noticed that I DO frequently rec, plug, and gush about those who "get it right," especially comics, TVs, and movies created by and for marginalized groups, all the freakin' time. That's half the point of this journal.

2. Actually, letter-writing campaigns can and do change things for the better. Just look at any example from comics or TV shows. Even if we can't get the Avatar cast changed, it's still an important thing to do, to get our voices out there.

3. Having said that, however, this is also a personal journal, and a place where I sometimes vent. Not trying to do anything constructive. Just venting my frustration. (Although I did link the much more constructive letter-writing campaign in both of my vent posts already, so natch.) And what you've done is: you showed up in the comments of my vent post, told me to "give it up" and poo-pooed the idea that this was anything to get upset about in the first place, then proceeded to attempt to change your tune (but not really) when you were challenged on your stupidity. Go ahead and look back at your first comment. And then the subsequent ones. See what you did there?

GOOD. DAY.

And that, boys and girls, is what we call "pitching a shitfit."

Excellent flounce, though. A+++++, would wank again.
