Clone Wars!!!!

Just saw Clone Wars, finally. LOVED IT. Now this is what a Star Wars movie should be: lots of action, just-barely-developed-enough-to-be-tolerable characters, at least minimally passable acting, lots of yay neato sci-fi space opera stuff, and lots of nifty Jedi Force-fueled shenanigans.

Granted, as with previous prequel films, the villainous "plot" was poorly thought out, and the military "strategy" employed by Anakin and others made no sense. I.E. the opening scene of the film. Unless I missed something, Anakin and Obi-Wan's BRILLIANT STRATEGY was to... attack the droids... and then attack the droids some more. Uh, that is not "strategy."

Anyway, things about the movie that rocked:

Ahsoka!!!

Ahsoka's backhanded lightsaber grip!!!

That vertical battle on Teth! Freakin' awesome! Reminded me Dead Fantasy II.

Badass Ventress was badass.

Cute baby Hutt was cute.

Non-wooden Anakin was non-wooden.

Rocking score by not-John-Williams was rocking.

Gay Hutt was... purple? Okay, seriously? There was a flaming homosexual Hutt with a lisp, a nasal effete Southern drawl, a feathered headpiece, and a purple body?!

Seriously?!

Oh, Lucas. That's almost as bad the Gungans.

Unrelated: I really really really need to catch up on the Expanded Universe again. Tahiri grew up to be a badass?! Freakin' Tahiri?! Awesome!

OMG yes the Mary Sue accusations set my teeth on edge. Ahsoka isn't super-special or extraordinary, other than the fact that she's young. She's about as competent as Anakin was when he was a Padawan in AotC. She's not sparklypoo. She's not perfect. She screws up, and she has real character flaws. Yes a big part of the story is "Anakin grows to grudgingly respect Ahsoka," and that's usually the trademark of a Sue, BUT. In this case it really was all about Anakin's character arc; the whole point of the movie was showing how Anakin matured, and of course learning to respect his Padawan is part of that.

I've heard people say that Ahsoka is a sue because a) she's a competent female and that is clearly extraordinary, b) she's an exotic-looking, overly-pretty alien (but ummmm it's Star Wars, yes?) and c) because Yoda and Obi-Wan and Rex and everybody totally love her. As for the last part, I don't see it. Yoda vetted for her, but he vets for lots of padawans. Obi-Wan didn't so much like Ahsoka herself as he was amused by how Anakin reacted to her. And Rex, well, Rex likes everybody who's on his side.

Argh. She is not a Sue!

I KNOW!! She didn't even fight the Sith and kick their butts or nething! She lost to Ventress and Anakin had to rescue her. She's been trained as a Jedi since she was a child, it's not like she just showed up and was like "hay I'm 12 and have no training but I'm gonna be a Jedi k?"

I find it hilarious that ppl complain about her in a universe where male chars kill Sith lords while padawans, win pod races as a 10 year old, blow up giant battlecruisers as a 10 year old, blow up the death star as a farm boy, have the highest medichloran count EVAR EVAR EVAR, etc etc etc >:\

And you're absolutely right. This was about Anakin MATURING and accepting her. And all she did was complete a mission of ANAKIN'S planning! It's not like she made up her own plan against Anakin's orders, defeated all the Sith Lords and at the end rescues Anakin and Obi-Wan and they're all like OMG YOU ARE SO AWESOME. (And then Anakin dumps Padme for her xD)
