The F-Word is the best fucking food show ever. Period, end of story. And those of us over here in North America are finally getting the entire first season streaming on Hulu. I literally screamed a little bit when I saw it show up on my Hulu queue today. (And then immediately regretted screaming a little bit because OW HORRIBLE INJURY ARRRRGH.)

But seriously this is the best fucking food show in the world because it has EVERYTHING. Including: )

Anywhoo, this show is just so perfect in every way. Love it love it love it. It's a conscientious cooking show that addresses a lot of serious business issues, ranging from sexism in the culinary profession to how class privilege affects food access, while at the same time being full of fun and fabulous cooking segments, truly useful tips and techniques for home cooks, and Gordon Ramsay being Gordon Ramsay. It's the perfect cooking show. I can't wait to watch the rest of it as soon as it's available to me.

I know that I don't write about this enough in my livejournal, but to be perfectly honest: moreso than anime, moreso than manga, moreso than comics, moreso than any other type of television... I fucking LOVE cooking competition shows. They are my obsession.

The combination of cheesy staged theatricality + food porn + reality-show drama + occasional educational moments sucks me in every time.

Not only do I occasionally learn techniques that I actually use in the kitchen from watching these shows (idiot-proof poached eggs! mixing instant coffee with whipping cream = INSTANT DELICIOUSNESS! how to make perfect homemade gnocchi! how to make gorgeous fish stock! how to grill pork in raw miso! how to mix textures in a dish! how to pair the right sides with the right meats in order to balance sweet/savory and acid/base notes!), but the ZOMG DRAMA aspect never fails to entertain, either. The triumph! The tears! Having that perfect cast of contestants that include characters that you love to hate and characters that it just breaks your heart to see fail! Plus there is something that I just love about the way that these shows construct increasingly wacky cooking challenges that truly do test the contestants' creativity and improvisation skills. Chopped and Hell's Kitchen are definitely the best at that particular aspect. Hey, remember that episode of Chopped where the contestants had to use anchovies, lettuce, and chocolate in the same dish?! I sure as hell do.

And then there are just the ridiculous, over-the-top, and utterly delightful little touches that show up in just about every show that Gordon Ramsey produces.

Like: I'm re-watching one of my favorite episodes of Master Chef America right now, the second season episode with the pork challenge. For pure theatricality purposes, the judges have brought a gigantic hog named "Bob" onto the stage with them. So the contestants are running right behind Bob, carrying their cuts of pork from the pantry to their cooking stations, and Bob suddenly turns his head toward the contestants and snorts.

The producers of the show decided to hover a censorship blur over Bob's mouth at that moment and bleeped out his snort.

For some reason I cannot stop laughing at that. It's the ridiculous little moments like that which really make these shows awesome.

Well, that and the time that Top Chef Masters had a cookie-baking competition judged by Sesame Street muppets. I still don't think that anything is ever going to top that.

Also... I found this because a post about it was being mocked on Somethingawful.com's Weekend Web. As far as I'm concerned, THIS IS AWESOME. It's a theatrical production starring two adorable Shetland Sheepdogs. *I* would pay money to see this. Check out the photo galleries on the website, they are sooooooo cuuuuuuuute.

Hey people that own The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe on DVD: Does anyone have the 2-disc collector's edition? If so, what physical extras did it come with? I picked up the R2 Japanese edition the other day because it was on sale. It came with postcards and bookmarks. I've noticed that postcards and/or bookmarks are pretty standard extras for Disney's "collector's edition" DVDs. (I.E., my special edition of the PotC II DVD also came with postcards.) Since I haven't bought a Region 1 Disney DVD in forever, I'm curious if the postcards thing is universal to most Disney DVDs, or if it's just a Japan thing.

Also, what's up with not including theatrical trailers as DVD extra anymore? Seriously, it's really annoying. Okay, maybe this sounds weird, but I'm a bit of a trailer connoisseur. I looove to watch theatrical trailers, especially good ones. But lately I've noticed that it's becoming rarer and rarer for trailers to be included as DVD extras, particularly on Disney DVDs. (Fox is usually pretty good about this, though.) I mean, a year or two ago I would have just expected a theatrical trailer to be a standard extra for any DVD releease. So why are fewer and fewer DVDs including theatrical trailers? Maybe it's a silly thing to get worked up about, but it's starting to piss me off.
