And then his PARENTS were EATEN by a BEAR.

Oh god, I am so glad that I'm not the only one who feels that way.

I'm going to check back on the comments in a few days and see if I'm not alone. Or if the fanbrats start wanking, that would be entertaining too. Hating on Saint Fay?! How dare they!!

I can't be the only person who progressed from eye-rolling to outright laughter while reading the Celes arc. I can't be.

I do think CLAMP went a little overboard. Can't a character just be happy-go-lucky without "masking his tragic past" anymore?

Or just a milder form of tragic, like getting dumped by his secret crush in junior high. CAN HE EVER LOVE AGAIN?

I only read through Celes once, and the whole time I was thinking about how Fai should have turned into a complete sociopath because of his childhood. Manga characters have done it for less. Toss in FWR's deux-ex-machina appearance for added trauma. After all that, Ashura's whole killing people for obscure reasons was simply unnecessary. I don't remember why he did it, but there are nicer ways to betray a broken soul. I adore Fai for using smiles to cover the sad, but I don't pay much mind to the reasons for his woe.

I agree, for all accounts and purposes, Fai should have completely lost his sanity back then... Perhaps changing his name and hiding behind a smile were his way of coping.

Though it seemed rather negated when he succumbed to all those suicidal "don't deserve to live" tendencies in the infinity arc... Good thing he had Kurogane to knock some sense back into him. ;o)

Well, that and the borderline obsessive need to protect Sakura that all Tsubasa characters seem to acquire. XD

"Overboard" is an understatement, I think. The Celes arc alone would have been ridiculously overboard, but it also came immediately after a string of three ridiculously tragic things happening to Fay in the manga, so it was just... too much. Over-the-top. Completely ridiculous. Which is why it reminded me so much of that old Saturday Night Live sketch, where some really tragic person is telling his or her really tragic life story, and the punchline is always "And then my PARENTS were EATEN by a BEAR!"

I mean, Kurogane has a tragic past too, but his tragic past was well-written and packed a gut-wrenching emotional punch. Because it didn't go overboard. Fay's tragic past was just to over-the-top ridiculously tragic that it was robbed of any emotional impact.

Just when you thought his life couldn't suck any more, CLAMP gives the ol' double-whammy. Lose your parents, separated from your brother, king goes apeshit, brother dies, father-figure goes apeshit, and YOU'RE BLAMED FOR EVERYTHING. @_@

Also, spending years crawling around in a pile of corpses! Don't forget the part where he spent years crawling around in a pile of corpses!

Oh, right. How could I forget? XD

Really now. My cousin called me with the spoilers for that particular chapter when I was out of town, and I honestly thought she must be reading the wrong series.

I don't think anyone anticipated Tsubasa getting as emo as it has. Really, from the Tokyo arc on, it's just...UGH. I understand trying to up the drama when it gets down to the wire, but one of my favorite aspects of Tsubasa was just the concept of strangers becoming friends while traveling to fantastic lands.

Like kids on a camping trip.

Where did the love go, CLAMP? ;-;
