This week's Tsubasa - Chapter 185
Let's do the time warp again!
So, to recap from last week: Sakura is dead. (This chapter opens with a frontpiece illustration of DEAD SAKURA. Classy.) Syaoran, Kurogane, and Fay are stuck in a time loop.
CLAMP wastes eight pages repeating the events of the previous chapter in order to show that YES INDEED Our Heroes are stuck in a time loop. I'm not kidding.
So, that evening, Our Heroes end up staying at the home of the apple seller again. After the apple seller retires to bed, Syaoran makes an important observation: They didn't actually repeat an entire day. They only repeated the portion of the day that began when they arrived in the town "yesterday." And they arrived in the town in the late afternoon. So what happened was: 1. They woke up in the morning. 2. They stepped outside into the town. 3. They suddenly found themselves repeating the events from the previous afternoon, and indeed, the sun was already setting when their time loop began to repeat, even though it should have been morning.
So the time loop begins the moment that Syaoran/Fay/Kurogane entered Clow Country, basically.
Fay suggests that FWR may be behind this. Kurogane and Syaoran both give him their best "THANK YOU CAPTAIN OBVIOUS!" glares. (Priceless.) Then Fay suggests, "Let's wait one more day to confirm for sure. See if the same time repeats tomorrow."
Yeah, okay. At this point, that is a totally useless suggestion. Either Fay is really stupid...
Or maybe Fay has an ulterior motivation.
Syaoran goes to bed in a different room. Kurogane asks Fay why he split up the sleeping arrangements differently than he did the previous night - with Syaoran and Mokona in one room, and Fay and Kurogane in another room. Fay gives Kurogane his best flirtatious smile and says, "I thought you would notice that."
MAYBE FAY HAS AN ULTERIOR MOTIVATION.
Footnote: In the previous chapter, we were never shown Our Heroes' sleeping arrangements, so this whole "different arrangements" thing is new as of this chapter. In the previous chapter, did they all sleep together? It's impossible to tell. We're shown all four characters having a conversation together in front of a door, and in the very next panel it's morning already and they're gathering in the empty dining room of the house. So, whatever. Anyway. Back to Fay'sclever obvious plot to give himself one more night to make out with Kurogane. Oh baby. Here we go.
Fay unfastens Kurogane's cloak and slips it off.
MAYBE FAY HAS AN ULTERIOR MOTIVATION.
Fay exposes Kurogane's mechanical arm, licks his fingers (yes he really does this), and says, "You never take off your cape or face mask. Not even when we were alone in this room last night. How strange."
And thenthings get really sexy.
No, wait, what am I talking about? This is CLAMP. Of course things are about to take an immediate turn toward the PROFOUNDLY UNSEXY. And the very next page does not disappoint. Fay starts grilling Kurogane, "Are you trying to hide your facial expressions? Are you in pain? Does the arm not fit right? Is your body rejecting it?"
Kurogane answers, "As long as I can move the arm, there's no problem."
Fay is relentless. "It hurts more than it did yesterday, doesn't it?" He presses on. "Answer me. So I can determine whether our time is flowing as normal even within the looped time of Clow Country."
So Kurogane answers, "Yeah, it does."
So then Fay punches Kurogane on his injured shoulder and yells at him, "If it HURTS then you should have told me from the beginning BAKA!!"
(Note: this is the second epic punch that Fay as administered to Kurogane in the past twenty chapters. Is it just me, or is this relationship getting abusive?)
Anyway, having administered his LOL HILARIOUS DOMESTIC ABUSE allotment for this chapter, Fay quickly turns philosophical, and gives a speech about how they shouldn't hide things from each other anymore. Kurogane gets all pouty and says, "You're one to talk." Fay gives Kurogane a big smile and says, "Yes, I AM the one to talk."
Cut to Syaoran and Mokona. Syaoran is sitting on his bed, watching a window. Mokona asks him if he's going to sleep. Syaoran says that he wants to stay awake and try to see the moment that the time loop resets. But suddenly both Mokona and Syaoran grow woozy and pass out.
They wake up to find that it's late afternoon again. Just like before, Our Heroes step out of the apple seller's house, and straight into the scene from "yesterday," included Syaoran running into the cute little boy. CLAMP repeats this scene and scenery for two more wasted pages. The chapter ends with Syaoran looking all grim and vowing to make FWR pay forinflicting upon us this annoying and cliched plot device making the village people repeat the same few hours over and over again.

As much as I appreciate CLAMP's desire to spawn more KuroFai fanwork, I would happily trade that scene in for a decent story-driven chapter. Why must they drag their feet? Are they aiming for another 5 volumes?

You know, they might as well get a gigantic Kero-chan to glomp up the universe, so they can end this mess. Too bad I'd be the only sad individual who'd like an ending like that. Of course, this is considering they'd actually END things, but, being CLAMP, I bet they would continue the series even without the good old universe. :\
