This week's Tsubasa - Chapter 184

So, to recap: Our Heroes, minus Sakura (one of whom is dead and the other of whom is disembodied and presumably imprisoned by FWR) finally arrive in Clow Country.

They waste some time posing dramatically and staring at the ruins where Sakura was first attacked. Yuuko previously warned them that Clow Country was now "cut off from time." Mokona wonders what that means. Fay doesn't know. And Syaoran doesn't CARE. He tells the party that they have to walk through a small town before they get to the ruins, so off they go.

They end up back in the town from the very first chapter of the manga. Except that now it's BIZZARRO TOWN because everybody is REALLY REALLY CHEERFUL AND HAPPY. Just like in the first chapter of the manga. Just as if there was never a massive earthquake, their king was never attacked by monsters, and their princess had never gone missing. REALLY CHEERFUL AND HAPPY. To a creepy, Twilight Zone-ish extent.

Syaoran nearly runs into a cute kid carrying a basket of apples. He strikes up a conversation with the cute kid and his family. Yes, he and Kurogane and Fay and the magical talking creampuff are travelers. Yes, they just arrived. The cute kid's mother offers them a place to stay for the night, since it's too cold to travel through the dessert once the sun sets. Also, she mentions that there's a "festival" tomorrow. This seems like a fairly mysterious thing to mention, but Syaoran, of course, having suddenly become completely passive and stupid, does not ask any follow-up questions.

Syaoran is really gung-ho to find Sakura, but he rationalizes that they should have a place to sleep, and besides, he needs to collect "information" about Sakura's whereabouts, at least before they set out toward the ruins the following morning.

HEY DUMBASS, MAYBE SHE'S IN THE RUINS.

The cute kid's mother gives Our Heroes a basket of pastries before she sends them off to bed. She tells them that there will be more pastries for them to eat in the morning.

Syaoran holds an apple and angstily reminisces about his childhood with Sakura. Except, WRONG SYAORAN. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaargh.

Despite his professed interest in "information-gathering," at no point does Syaoran think to ask anybody, "So, whatever happened to King Touya? Because the last time I saw him through my clone's eyes he was mortally wounded..." Nor does he ask, "Has anybody noticed that your princess is missing?" Nor does he ask, "So, uh, those monsters that were overruning the place and attacking everyone when my clone left. Whatever happened to them?" Or how about, "Hey, can anybody tell me the date? I've been dimension-hopping for a while, I don't know how fast time was flowing here, maybe I should at least find out how long it's been since I - mean, my clone - left." He doesn't ask anything.

Hey, Syaoran. You know what's NOT an effective method of information-gathering? Giving up and going to bed.

After dinner, Fay says, "Well, I asked at dinner, but nobody seems to have noticed anything unusual going on." WEAK. God. Not even Fay is THAT stupid. Come on, CLAMP. What did he ask? Did he only ask one question and give up? Did he think to ask anything specific about the princess or Touya? Did he even ask the date? Aaaaaaaaaaaaaargh again.

So. Our Heroes wake up the next morning. Their hosts are already gone, presumably to do their chores for the day. But there's no sign of the promised pastries, either. The kitchen table is bare. Our Heroes wander back out in the street. Syaoran nearly runs into the cute kid again. The cute kid starts talking to Syaoran, repeating his dialogue from the previous day, and acting as if this is the first time that they've met. Meanwhile, the rest of the people milling in the street have arranged themselves so that the tableau looks identical to the scene that Syaoran saw when he first arrived in the town "yesterday."

OH SHI--

While the situation seems interesting (a day which keeps on looping), their reactions leave a lot to be desired. It's like they forgot how to write characters anymore.

If they're going to do this, I wish they'd at least include some more MKR cameos for me to drool over.

Yeah, no kidding. I mean, here we have Syaoran - who has been established as a researcher's son, geeky, a bookworm, and a natural detective (or at least the clone was) - who for some inexplicable reason does not ONCE ask ANYBODY a SINGLE QUESTION upon returning to his strangeified hometown. And Fay doesn't ask any questions either, for some inexplicable reason. It makes no sense.
