I've noticed the same thing when I turn off the images while I'm browsing LJ at work, though for me it has always been that way - I thought it was just some weird Firefox quirk. I've noticed it's only on pages that use the plain LJ style, and not if the journal has the custom journal style enabled for comment pages, but I have no idea what might be causing it.
