Oh god yes do not even get me started with the fandom stupidity about Spirit. I think a lot of has to do with the fact that a good chunk of the fandom simply cannot seem to grasp the concept that Spirit loves his daughter very much but that he's still a bad father to her. I think a lot of them are stuck in the mindset that "he obviously loves her so much, therefore he's a GREAT father!" and the related mindset that "if you say that Spirit is a bad father that means you're saying that he doesn't love Maka but that's clearly not true!!1!" and blargh.

Yes, Spirit always has and always will deeply love his daughter. And yes, he was still a shitty father to her until very recently - which is why Maka was angry with him until very recently. It's possible to love someone with all your heart and still fail at not being a terrible father/mother/sister/brother/son/daughter/friend/whatever to them. Which is exactly what Spirit did - he loved Maka, but he failed at NOT being a terrible father.

Sorry, rant. But yeah I feel you on the fandom stupidity about Spirit and Maka. So much agreed with all of that.
