Soul Eater Not! Chapter 9: Beef intestines, pumpkins, and lovers.
So we open with Tsugumi staring intently at one of the tanuki statues that Me-Me and Agna (yes, her name is Agna) bought for their dorm room way back in chapter 2. Hey, remember that?
"What are you doing?" Me-Me asks. "Why are you staring at the tanuki statue?"
"Oh... Er, ummmmmm.... I was just thinking that in a weird way it looks kind of like Kim-senpai."
"It definitely does," Me-Me agrees.
Oh my god. That tanuki is a rotund animal with an upturned nose, a vacant grin, and gigantic testicles. Kim is a slender teenage girl with a calculating smile and presumably no visible testicles. Either Tsugumi is starting to gain some soul perception ability that she may be unaware of - hence the only reason that she would make the connection between Kim and the visage of a tanuki in the first place - or she is completely freakin' blind.
"Kim will probably kill you if she hears you say something like that," Agna points out. Not that anybody could blame Kim.
Sometime later! "What?" Jackie asks. "A compatibility reading?"
"Yeah, yeah!!" Tsugumi says. "Kana-san's fortune-telling is super-accurate!" Come to think of it, Tsugumi think-bubbles with a sweatdrop, her predictions about the 'Witch of the Girls' Dormitory' turned out to be freakily accurate, too...
"No matter how much you try to attach yourself to Kim-senpai," Me-Me says with a sweet smile, "if you two are incompatible then it'll be totally meaningless!"
"Awfully blunt, aren't you..."
Thus, to Kana!
Agna glares down at Kana, apparently not forgetting past insults. "So is your fortune-telling truly as accurate as you claim it to be?"
Kana pulls out a card for Agna. The Dote (pronounced "doh-teh"), which is either a riverbank or beef intestine stew.
"?" Agna says. Given her upbringing she may not even know what dote is.
Kana pulls out a second card. The Pumpkin.
"Grrrrrrrrrrrr!"
Me-Me has to hold Agna back to prevent her from strangling Kana.
(ETA: So I managed to miss the point of the "dote-pumpkin" pun in my translation, but Yen Press translated it better and offers a good explanation as to how the cards are insulting Agna in their translation notes for Not! chapter 9.)
Completely ignoring her partners acting like idiots (something which she is apparently getting quite good at doing), Tsugumi smiles cheerfully at Kana. "Kana-san, please do Jackie's compatibility reading now!"
"Concentrate on the imagining your mental picture of the person whose compatibility you wish to test," Kana tells Jackie, "and pick a card."
"Imagine..."
Jackie starts blushing. I wonder what she's imagining.
"Choose your card," Kana says, spreading out the cards in front of Jackie.
Jackie picks her card and turns it over.
"The Lovers." Kana gives Jackie a thumbs-up. "A perfect match."
"Yaaaaaaay, go Jacqueline-senpai!" Tsugumi and Me-Me cheer.
Jackie blushes again and is suddenly surrounded by sparkles and flowers. "Y-yeah."
Suddenly, Eternal Feather! "I think I may have found a way to win over Kim-san!" she declares.
And that method of winning her over would be...? a narration box cheekily asks.
To be continued in the November issue!
Okay, so. Not counting the illustration page and the "story so far" page, this month's Not! chapter was only six pages long. Er, um.
But I know that Ohkubo was busy doing (*counts on fingers*) eleven (ELEVEN!!!) total color illustrations this month - what between the GanGan cover, the Soul Eater color page, the Soul Eater color spread, the Not! color page (which I probably shouldn't count because it's NOT EVEN A PICTURE but whatever), the volume 20 cover, the Not! volume 01 cover, and the five other original illustrations that he had to do for the promotional giveaway cards in Japanese bookstores - which is a LOT for any one artist to have on his plate in addition to writing two monthly manga series. So yeah, not entirely surprised that Not! was so short this month.
At least it was Not! that was shortened, and not the regular Soul Eater chapter.
Oh wells. More incredibly un-subtle yuri-flavored fanservice next month!

Yeah.....might be neat for Tsugumi to have soul perception, but...as of right now I'm not seeing it lol. I can forgive Ohkubo for reusing Kim's tanuki pose, he was a busy man last month, but I hope a little more happens with this series soon. Character backstories are great and all, but it's kinda moving at a crawl right now.
Think Ohkubo may have bitten off a little more than he could chew when he started this second series right when his main one is starting to round up to the final fight?

Or maybe this month was just a particularly bad month with all of the extra artwork that he had to do, I dunno.

This is why I could never be a mangaka. Deadlines. Like all eleven color illustrations and two manga chapters. Oh my. o.0

Totally agreed. I'm definitely glad for that!

And the yuri hints, making the Jackie-->Kim thing way more clrearer than in the SE series
Thank you!
