Soul Eater Not! Chapter 7: Tsugumi vs. the Fosbury Flop
OH MY GOD THEY ARE ABOUT TO BE EATEN BY A GIANT SPACE-VAGINA!!!!!
Er, I mean, the opening page of this month's chapter is apparently Tsugumi's dream sequence about her and Akane. Naked. Wrapped in white sheets. And floating against a backdrop of A GIGANTIC PINK SWIRLY SPACE-VAGINA.
So Tsugumi manages to include extremely unsubtle lesbian imagery in her dreams even when she's dreaming about a naked boy. That is IMPRESSIVE.
"Harudori."
"Akane-kun."
He leans in close, touching her chin. Tsugumi's pigtails magically come undone and her hair flows loosely around her face.
"You belong to me."
And then Tsugumi wakes up in her bed.
"A dream?! It was just a dream! It was just a dream..."
Tsugumi sees Me-Me curled up beside her. "Me-Me-chan is in my bed again. I guess that's why I had that dream..."
Then Tsugumi pulls back the covers. "WHY IS SHE NAKED...?!"
Tsugumi flips out. "And why is she covered in mud?! What did she DO to end up like that?!"
Anya is awake and apparently choosing to ignore this comment. "We're having our physical strength testing all day today," Anya says. "Don't use up all of your energy too early in the morning."
"What is that supposed to mean?!"
But nevertheless, Tsugumi gets up and gets dressed. Will you be mine? she remembers Akane asking her. Even though it was just a joke, I can't believe that being asked that by Akane-kun was enough to inspire such an intimate dream...
Flashback to Tsugumi freaking out at the cafe with Akane.
"I'm joking," Akane says.
"Huh?!"
Akane lets go of her hand and stands up. "Harudori, it's only been two weeks since you came to Shibusen, right? As far what you really want to accomplish here... There's no need to be impatient, even if you haven't decided upon your goal yet. But if after one year you still haven't found your purpose," he says, putting back on his glasses, "I'll find it for you."
Back in the present: "Tsugumi-san, we're going to be late," Anya says.
"Sorry, sorry! I'm coming!"
Being asked that by a boy made my heart pound so hard, and yet... When he said that it was just a joke, I felt more relieved than disappointed... I thought that I was in love with love, but I guess I was just in love with the idea of love---... I'm just not ready... For a real romance...
Tsugumi orally molests some ellipses. Maka would be proud. I have to... find my purpose!!
And on the next page, hello fanservice. So... That's the idea stuck in my head right now. And today everyone in the NOT class is doing our physical strength tests.
Really, Ohkubo? The last time that you drew Shibusen students in gym uniforms - and doing these exact same tests, mind you - they were all wearing normal track shorts, girls included.And then you drew Ox's naked ass for all of us to look at. (ETA: Oops, my bad! Maka was indeed wearing bloomers in that chapter, as was pointed out in the comments below. I misremembered, sorry!)
But anyway, Ohkubo, now you're putting the girls in Japanese-style gym bloomers with inexplicable thigh-high stockings?! The bloomers I can swallow, I guess, because it is established canon that Big Daddy is both a gigantic weaboo and a perv who likes little girls' underwear, but... stockings?! Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like GYM UNIFORM THIGH-HIGH STOCKINGS?!
Honestly, I'm not feeling any self-confidence right now... Tsugumi goes on. It's not like I think I'm not in good shape or anything, it's just that...
"I heard that somebody in the EAT class did the 100 meter dash in five seconds!"
"No way!"
It's just that this is Shibusen, after all...
"And Anya-san hasn't come out of the locker room yet..."
Inside the locker room, Anya is having issues. "These... These are... These are really the bloomers that commoners wear? This lascivious piece of clothing? Everyone can clearly see my buttocks... Do I really have to wear this in front of all those people...?"
No, actually, she does not. So Anya puts on a pair of (honestly much more flattering) track pants and leaves the locker room. GOOD FOR ANYA.
"Anya-san!" Me-Me calls out.
"Come on, we're about to start!" Tsugumi says.
"Anya?" Sid says. "You're not going to be able to set any records wearing pants like that."
Yeah I mean it's not like Maurice Green set the men's 100 meter world record in the 2004 summer Olympics while wearing sporty blue track pants or anything.
Anya glares at Sid. "IS THAT GOING TO BE A PROBLEM!!"
Sid backs down instantly. "Nope! As long as you're okay with those pants then I don't mind..."
Some time later! "This is 'physical fitness testing' and yet they're even making us throw the shot put..." Tsugumi says. "I knew that these weren't going to be normal tests..."
"WOW!! THAT'S AMAZING!!" Somebody shouts.
"SO FREAKIN' FAST--!!"
"Akane, 6.32 seconds. Clay, 10.18 seconds."
While the fangirls gush, Clay places his hands on his hips and says to a panting Akane, "Don't overdo it so much..."
"Which makes both Akane and Clay superior to the rest of the NOT class," Sid narrates out loud. "And there aren't that many who could beat Akane in the EAT class, either... Really, those two should..."
Tsugumi stares at Akane's back. "Amazing..." Then she notices that Akane is, in turn, staring at the back of Anya's head. He's looking at Anya-san...
"Woooooooow!" Somebody shouts. "She's amazing, too!!"
"Um?" Me-Me's disembodied word bubble asks. "How many throws have I done already?"
"This is your third throw."
Me-Me pulls back her shot put. "Tatane Me-Me, first throw!"
"Third," Jackie says.
Me-Me throws the shot put. "15.6 meters!" Jackie says.
"She's superior to all the other girls so far today, isn't she..." Fanboy comments.
"And the shot puts on Tatane's chest are superior, too," A decidedly more creepy fanboy comments.
"Me-Me-chan..." Tsugumi says. "I had no idea that she was so amazing... I mean, I thought that she was unfathomable before, but I never expected..."
Then Tsugumi notices that Akane is still staring at an oblivious Anya. Akane-kun... Is still staring at Anya-san...?
And then Tsugumi's thought-bubbles turn black. Everybody was freaking out about Me-Me-chan throwing the shot put, and yet Akane-kun still hasn't taken his eyes off Anya-san for even a single second... Maybe Akane-kun was always interested in Anya-san all along, and maybe that's the only reason that he tried to get closer to me...? No, I don't think so... But if that WERE true, then what was the point of asking me to be his partner even if he tried to say that he was just joking about it? Then Tsugumi shakes her head. Whatever! Akane-kun can stare at whoever he wants to stare at, it's got nothing to do with me! Argh!! Why did he have to say that to me, now things are all weird between us!!
Then Tsugumi realizes that Anya is doing the high jump. "1.87 meters," Eternal Feather says.
Tsugumi's eyes look ready to pop right out of her face.
"Anya-san is amazing, isn't she?" Eternal Feather says to Tsugumi. "She's ranking at the very top amongst the new girl students."
And she did this while wearing pants, too. Sid, are you paying attention?
"Amazing..." Tsugumi agrees. Me-Me-chan too... And Anya-san...
"Tsugumi! It's your turn," Sid says.
"Coming!"
But compared to them, I just...

"And for those of you who are unable to do the backward jump," Jackie says, "you don't need to hurt yourselves. Just do a belly flop instead."
Tsugumi stares at her feet, her face bright red. How humiliating!!
Despite attempting to belly flop her way through the high jump, however, Tsugumi still manages to epic fail, crashing straight into the bar.
"That concludes today's physical strength testing," Sid declares. "Good work, everyone."
I'm pathetic... Tsugumi think-bubbles. I can't feel proud that Me-Me-chan or Anya-san asked me to be their partner anymore. Instead, I just feel worthless as a partner... My purpose for coming to Shibusen? To think that I was worried about that this morning... The way I am right now, I won't be able to DO anything even when I do find my purpose... Forget about my purpose, right now I have bigger things to worry about!!
"You really pushed yourself hard today," Akane says, startling Tsugumi out of her think-bubbling.
"Akane-kun, Clay-kun!"
"As long as you can keep trying as hard as you did today, I think you're going to be just fine," Akane says.
So he was watching me while I took my tests... "Thank you." Tsugumi looks up a him. "I still don't know what my purpose for being at Shibusen is, but for right now, I'm not going to let myself lose to Anya-san or Me-Me-chan! Anyway, I'm just going to keep trying really hard from now on!"
"That's a very Harudori-like answer," Akane says. "And I think it's great."
"Um, sorry for babbling at you."
"Tsugumi-san, what are you doing?" Anya calls out.
Me-Me waves at Tsugumi. "Come on! The physical strength testing is about to start!"
"No," Anya corrects her, "It's already over."
Tsugumi bows to Akane, then runs to join Anya and Me-Me. "Wait for me, Anya-san, Me-Me-chan!"
I don't need to waste my time worrying about goals and purposes and stuff! I've only just arrived at the starting line!
Forced sports metaphor, everybody groan.
And with that, we are off until next month!
Also: Yes, yes, I know that I skipped the recap for chapter 6. Sorry, but real life got in the way. Oh well. There's no point in going back to do it now, and I'm sure that life moves on for all of us. ;)

So all that basically happens this chapter was that we find out that Akane was trolling, and that Tsugumi sucks at sports. And yet it's still entertaining.
I'm wondering how long until Shaula plans to do something, maybe she'll sneak into shibusen as a student, considering she LOOKS young enough to pull it off.

Not! seems more shippy... or less subtle with the shiptease these last few chapters than the main series. My poor brain's finding it hard to keep up since I fall in love with a new pairing or two each chapter. And I for one would love to see Shauna infiltrate Shibusen undercover like her big sis did. I could so imagine them meeting accidently but forced to stay under-cover. Awkward, thinly veiled animousity ensues as their forced to keep it up while others are present. Not sure how it'd fit in with canon but it'd be fun to watch.

Me too. I like that Not! is internally consistent and so far doesn't have any major plot holes that make me want to bang my head against a wall.
