nenena: (MLP - rainbow dash)

Happy Oaks Day!

Clearly directly related to today's celebration of all things horsey-related, the season finale of My Little Pony is now available on Youtube.

Here, let me recap it for you.

CELESTIA: Being a princess sure is boring. I think I'll invite Twilight Sparkle and her friends to my gala because there's an 90% likelihood that they'll destroy everything and that will at least make the gala interesting. Also I laugh at the pain of others.

PREDICTABLY....

RAINBOW DASH: (*creates mass destruction*)
FLUTTERSHY: (*complete psychotic breakdown*)
RARITY: (*traumitizes a member of the royal family by attacking him with cake*)
APPLEJACK: (*pulls an Apple Bloom*)
PINKI PIE: (*RUINS EVERYTHING*)

TWILIGHT: Gosh Princess I'm so sorry that my friends totally destroyed your fancy gala.

CELESTIA: That's okay Twilight Sparkle. That was actually my plan from the beginning and you all danced for me exactly like the little puppets on strings that you are. Also I learned a valuable lesson about friendship.

SPIKE: Friendship means trolling together!

THE END.

In short, Celestia is an epic troll, this series is hilarious, and if anybody still needed any proof that Friendship is Magic ain't your momma's My Little Pony, I think this episode delivered in spades.

I agree with this everything.

Psychotic Fluttershy both scared me and made me extremely happy.

Totally a stranger on your journal and sorry for the random comment. But I just want to say I read your Madoka post and am glad for it. I initially loved the show, then started hating it (mostly because it was inconsistent, hyped for no reason and fails as a deconstruction and is being claimed as original when Sailor Moon started that shit forever ago). But thank you, because you addressed something I didn't even realize that was bothering me.

The writing of the girls really bothered me. A lot. And I think that Sayaka especially exemplified that. She died over a guy. And her friend (who we didn't even know knew the guy) likes him out of no where. And so Sayaka is depressed and fucks herself up and gets killed for it. Get. Out. That right there is so much fail on plot and characters. The sexism in it is painful.

I'm sorry what you went through on that post. And sorry for the random post.

And for an in context, relevant comment, I had no clue that FiM had its season finale already. I'm still on the first 8-10 eps. Oh goodness.
But seriously, we need more FiM's in the world. And less Madoka (and K-On, etc).

Thank you for the kind words. :)

I actually didn't ping any epic fail behind the writing of Sayaka's character until the very end. For the stuff leading up to her death, I think it actually wasn't handled that badly - I mean, for a girl Sayaka's age, that sort of schoolgirl crush stuff really can feel like the be-all, end-all of everything. But then I saw the final episode, and it wasn't so much Sayaka's choice to stay dead for the sake of that boy as much as it was the way that the writers so clearly presented that bit as a noble and good choice on Sayaka's part... Barf. The sexism was so gross.

For me, it felt like they were writing her as someone who was trying to be more of a victim and burdened than she was and looking for anything to justify her feelings. And even when she had friends reaching out to her, it was nothing and all that mattered was that she was a zombie and couldn't be with Kamijou. I felt that kind of downed on the relationships between the girls and played up on the crush a little too much. But there's that point too. They were constantly pointing out how noble it is that girls always make sacrifices.

I can definitely agree with this.

Me too.

I've been kind of waiting for Fluttershy to have an Elmyra moment all season long, but then she actually went above and beyond the Elmyra shtick and into full-on "ALL SHALL LOVE ME AND DESPAAAAAAAIR" mode and it was glorious.

SOOO GOOD!
I want to believe Prince Blue Blood's (or should I say b100 b100d's) name was a reference to Homestuck, but that's probably a stretch! Also, the Into The Woods reference (the into the gala part) was awesome!

Er, definitely a stretch. You realize that Homestuck didn't invent the whole "blue blood" thing, right (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nobility#.22Blue.22_blood)?

But ooooh, I didn't catch the "Into the Woods" callout! Nice catch!

Ahhhh! I didn't know about that. I feel really silly. Thanks for setting me straight!

I've been sorta following the series since you've been keeping tabs on it and despite not watching it as a child, this nudged my curiosity in to checking out this episode...

And it was glorious.

Watching Fluttershy have a breakdown makes me want to watch all the other episodes where the others have there's respectfully. Among other amusing antics of course.

This episode was simply MAGNIFICENT

I figured it was going to be an epic disaster, but seeing Fluttershy going all Elmyra on those animals simply took the cake, and made this one of the greatest season finales I've ever seen in a TV series. AND RARITY, OH MY GOD THAT WAS AWESOME.

Now if I could just see those Bushwoolies and possibly an EPIC Homestuck reference in the next season my life will be effin' complete.

On a sadder note, it's a shame Lauren Faust isn't gonna' be directing the show anymore, but hopefully it won't be any less epic.

Actually, Lauren Faust didn't direct the show during the first season. She was the executive producer. In the second season she's still going to be a co-producer which means that she'll have substantial creative input, just not the final say on things.

I seriously doubt that MLP is ever going to have a Homestuck reference (why would it?), but I'm also crossing my fingers that we're going to have some more G1 shout-outs next season. Bushwoolies would be great. And SEA PONIES por favor!!

Ah, thanks for clearing that up.
