Scanspam Week Kickoff: Soul Eater's crimes against the color wheel
Hey guys. I am a) in the midst of my three-day journey home now, b) sick and tired of these motherfucking scans sitting on my motherfucking harddrive, and c) totally in the mood for another SCANSPAM WEEK! Because I love doing scanspam posts, they cheer me up, and they also only take a few minutes to write - which is great for a week when I'll be traveling a lot.
So let's scanspam!
And to kick off Scanspam Week, here, have some very special Soul Eater DVD box scans. For certain limited definitions of "special."

This is the Soul/Maka DVD box. This one is actually my favorite of the three, since the color combination rocks - I love the darkish red color contrasted with the light blue cover on the inside. See, the outer cover is actually a slipcase, which means that the big fat blue spine of the inner cover is visible on one side. This looks really awesome if you've got a good color combination between the outer and inner covers, as is the case with this one. But with the next two boxes, however... not so much.
Anyway, this is also the only DVD box in which the cover illustration actually wraps around four of the five available surfaces of the outer box. Hence, I had to scan the outer box in sections, and then
alice_rm and
furikku edited them together for me. Thank you, you guys!!

Maka without the inner cover.

Inner cover. This one slightly wrapped around too, as you can tell, but I was far too lazy to scan multiple surfaces just to get the bottom of Soul's shoe and the edge of his knee. Sorry.

And now we come to Black Star and Tsubaki. The outer cover actually isn't so bad...

Looking good...

...and JESUS CHRIST WTF OMG that is a HIDEOUS shade of yellow right there.
Argh. Argh!! That shade of yellow didn't look nearly so bad on the website previews that I've seen, but in real life... Yeah. It's. Um. Yeah.
To be fair, the combination of the bright yellow inside and the dark blue outer case looks really nice when you display this baby on your shelf with the inside-visible side facing out. But. As eyecatching as the blue-and-yellow combination looks from the outside, it's still a hideous shade of yellow to use as the background of an illustration, especially of an illustration featuring Tsubaki and Black Star's colors.
Sorry, art rant. And we haven't even gotten to the fugliest combo yet.

This one.
Why Nena, you may say, that doesn't actually look so bad! Well, the reason that the failtacular shade of purple used on the outer case here actually doesn't look so bad is because I messed with it, to the best of my ability, in Paint Shop. I at least tried to make the purpleness a little less of an eyesore. For the record, here's the shade of purple that the case looks like in real life:

Yes. It is very, very, VERY purple. (Yes, I heightened the contrast on that photograph to properly convey the shade of purple accurately. Yes, it really does look like that IRL.)
Compare that to the preview image that was posted on Amazon.co.jp:

If only the real thing actually looked like that. Oh well.

Yeah I like this shade of purple better.

Yep, the inside is a far richer flavor of pink than what I expected based on the preview images, too. BTW, when you put the two together, the combination of the pink inner spine contrasted against the purple outer cover of this case rates pretty high on the eyesore scale. It's just a really, really, really bad combination of colors. A lighter pink and/or a more blueish purple would have far, far improved the eyesore factor when you combine the two.
Sorry, art rant again.
And that's it. By the way, I only own these three cases and the DVDs that came with them. I didn't buy and I don't intend to scan the fourth DVD case, due to the fact that it is terminally boring. And I'm probably going to end up selling my DVDs and cases anyway, because I really don't like these cases (gee, can you tell?) and I see little point in owning R2 DVDs in the first place.
Okay, so, blah. Blah at these cases! I've had the scans sitting on my harddrive for ages, however, and I figured that it was far past time to just post them up here and get it over with.
Scanspam Week will continue tomorrow with some pretty, pretty things that I actually do like. Pretty, pretty things that start with an Ah! and end with My Goddess!.
Edited to add: Oh hey so Funimation.com is hosting subtitled Soul Eater episodes now? Sweet! I can't watch them since for the next 48 hours I'm still using a heathen Asian IP and therefore am blocked from Funi's website. But hey, something to look forward to when I get back home.
(Oh please tell me that they're being consistent with Anglicizing/not Anglicizing stuff. Pleeeeaaaase tell me. I can't stand the way that the manga Anglicizes "DWMA" but then leaves the weaboo Japanese terms like shinigami intact. Which, okay, granted, might actually be slightly appropriate in light of the fact that Shinigami-sama is a canon weaboo. But still, my kneejerk reaction is blargh! Either Anglicize or don't Anglicize, but don't do a half-arsed job of it!)
Edited again: "Afreet" is a fucking awesome translation. I approve. I wish that Funi had come up with something more creative than "Lord Death" for Shinigami-sama, though.

.. i like pink 83
ur right tho on the hideous yellow for volume 2 and the 4th box looks pretty shetty. Granted they prolly are gonna look better than the future funi dvds, i mean, considering how pretty much all their latest releases are cheap looking
bootlegsthinpaks.Pleasseee funi i know the economy sucks right now but pleaaaase release individual dvds with an artbox like in the good old days ;__;
ToT
strongly that the way that I can soon buy

You're a doll. <3

Thank you for the DVD box scans! They sound pretty cool, even if they color combinations are unfortunate.

Wow. I kind of like that.
Don't kill me but I actually really, really like that. It's much better than either leaving the Japanese untranslated, or going with something literal like "demon-god."
And it's going to be super-duper linguistic AWESOME once we get to the part where some dude named "Asura" becomes an "Afreet." Awesome.

as always, doing weird posturesno subject
A-also, what is "Afreet"? And... and...
LORD DEATH.
Come on, Funimation. Just call him "The Grim Reaper" or "That Cracked-out Guy Who Kind of Quacks Sometimes".
brb; laughing and crying at the same time

Have you heard of an "ifrit"? Afreet is just a more accurate transliteration of the Arabic.

It's sad to see that Yen Press did a half-baked job on the Soul Eater manga. Now I wish that Del Ray got Soul Eater.

....OH, that IS cool!
*learned something new today*

Kid is a cake. Seriously. That is REALLY REALLY purple. X_X
Afreet. I about peed my pants laughing over that one. Ifrit would've been kind of cooler, even if it's not quite as accurate. I haven't watched the Funi vids yet, but I feel like I'm missing something obvious. 'DWMA'? What's that? ^^;;;

ALSO, I am very happy to hear that you're feeling better.

The thing is, I can understand why they chose the inner case colors-- they coordinate with the color light the weapons flash when they transform. But... there are better shades of blue, yellow, and pink. And purple. For some reason, I think Kid's box would look awesome with a dark charcoal gray outer box. The yellow background should have been shifted slightly to actually match the star on Tsubaki's chest, or possibly gone to a bit more buttery a yellow. And I think the blue background would be better if it was a bit more cyan. But whatever. *yawns and stops babbling about colors*

But hey, maybe I'm just so used to yellows of all horrors **looks around her room -- yup, has that yellow in the mural** that Black Star's doesn't bother me too much. XD
Have fun~
