Scanspam Week Kickoff: Soul Eater's crimes against the color wheel

Hey guys. I am a) in the midst of my three-day journey home now, b) sick and tired of these motherfucking scans sitting on my motherfucking harddrive, and c) totally in the mood for another SCANSPAM WEEK! Because I love doing scanspam posts, they cheer me up, and they also only take a few minutes to write - which is great for a week when I'll be traveling a lot.

So let's scanspam!

And to kick off Scanspam Week, here, have some very special Soul Eater DVD box scans. For certain limited definitions of "special."

This is the Soul/Maka DVD box. This one is actually my favorite of the three, since the color combination rocks - I love the darkish red color contrasted with the light blue cover on the inside. See, the outer cover is actually a slipcase, which means that the big fat blue spine of the inner cover is visible on one side. This looks really awesome if you've got a good color combination between the outer and inner covers, as is the case with this one. But with the next two boxes, however... not so much.

Anyway, this is also the only DVD box in which the cover illustration actually wraps around four of the five available surfaces of the outer box. Hence, I had to scan the outer box in sections, and then [livejournal.com profile] alice_rm and [livejournal.com profile] furikku edited them together for me. Thank you, you guys!!

Maka without the inner cover.

Inner cover. This one slightly wrapped around too, as you can tell, but I was far too lazy to scan multiple surfaces just to get the bottom of Soul's shoe and the edge of his knee. Sorry.

                                                           Click for high-res!

And now we come to Black Star and Tsubaki. The outer cover actually isn't so bad...

Image.
                                                           Click for high-res!

Looking good...

Image.
                                                           Click for high-res!

...and JESUS CHRIST WTF OMG that is a HIDEOUS shade of yellow right there.

Argh. Argh!! That shade of yellow didn't look nearly so bad on the website previews that I've seen, but in real life... Yeah. It's. Um. Yeah.

To be fair, the combination of the bright yellow inside and the dark blue outer case looks really nice when you display this baby on your shelf with the inside-visible side facing out. But. As eyecatching as the blue-and-yellow combination looks from the outside, it's still a hideous shade of yellow to use as the background of an illustration, especially of an illustration featuring Tsubaki and Black Star's colors.

Sorry, art rant. And we haven't even gotten to the fugliest combo yet.

This one.

Why Nena, you may say, that doesn't actually look so bad! Well, the reason that the failtacular shade of purple used on the outer case here actually doesn't look so bad is because I messed with it, to the best of my ability, in Paint Shop. I at least tried to make the purpleness a little less of an eyesore. For the record, here's the shade of purple that the case looks like in real life:

Yes. It is very, very, VERY purple. (Yes, I heightened the contrast on that photograph to properly convey the shade of purple accurately. Yes, it really does look like that IRL.)

Compare that to the preview image that was posted on Amazon.co.jp:

Click for high-res!

If only the real thing actually looked like that. Oh well.

Image.
                                                           Click for high-res!

Yeah I like this shade of purple better.

Image.
                                                           Click for high-res!

Yep, the inside is a far richer flavor of pink than what I expected based on the preview images, too. BTW, when you put the two together, the combination of the pink inner spine contrasted against the purple outer cover of this case rates pretty high on the eyesore scale. It's just a really, really, really bad combination of colors. A lighter pink and/or a more blueish purple would have far, far improved the eyesore factor when you combine the two.

Sorry, art rant again.

And that's it. By the way, I only own these three cases and the DVDs that came with them. I didn't buy and I don't intend to scan the fourth DVD case, due to the fact that it is terminally boring. And I'm probably going to end up selling my DVDs and cases anyway, because I really don't like these cases (gee, can you tell?) and I see little point in owning R2 DVDs in the first place.

Okay, so, blah. Blah at these cases! I've had the scans sitting on my harddrive for ages, however, and I figured that it was far past time to just post them up here and get it over with.

Scanspam Week will continue tomorrow with some pretty, pretty things that I actually do like. Pretty, pretty things that start with an Ah! and end with My Goddess!.

Edited to add: Oh hey so Funimation.com is hosting subtitled Soul Eater episodes now? Sweet! I can't watch them since for the next 48 hours I'm still using a heathen Asian IP and therefore am blocked from Funi's website. But hey, something to look forward to when I get back home.

(Oh please tell me that they're being consistent with Anglicizing/not Anglicizing stuff. Pleeeeaaaase tell me. I can't stand the way that the manga Anglicizes "DWMA" but then leaves the weaboo Japanese terms like shinigami intact. Which, okay, granted, might actually be slightly appropriate in light of the fact that Shinigami-sama is a canon weaboo. But still, my kneejerk reaction is blargh! Either Anglicize or don't Anglicize, but don't do a half-arsed job of it!)

Edited again: "Afreet" is a fucking awesome translation. I approve. I wish that Funi had come up with something more creative than "Lord Death" for Shinigami-sama, though.

is it bad that i like how the kidd dvd is exceedingly pink-er than expected?

.. i like pink 83

ur right tho on the hideous yellow for volume 2 and the 4th box looks pretty shetty. Granted they prolly are gonna look better than the future funi dvds, i mean, considering how pretty much all their latest releases are cheap looking bootlegs thinpaks.

Pleasseee funi i know the economy sucks right now but pleaaaase release individual dvds with an artbox like in the good old days ;__;

ToT

First time commenting here but I wanted to thank you for taking the time and effort to provide your fellow Soul Eater fans with high quality scans like these.
You're a doll. <3

I watched the first five minutes, and they seem to be going the non-Anglicizing route. "DWMA," "Lord Death," and "Afreets." Yes, apparently an Afreet is a kishin. That kind of made me speechless and I stopped watching when I realized that.

Thank you for the DVD box scans! They sound pretty cool, even if they color combinations are unfortunate.

...Afreet.

Wow. I kind of like that.

Don't kill me but I actually really, really like that. It's much better than either leaving the Japanese untranslated, or going with something literal like "demon-god."

And it's going to be super-duper linguistic AWESOME once we get to the part where some dude named "Asura" becomes an "Afreet." Awesome.

I didn't know the mythological ties behind Afreet when I first saw the subs, but now that I do, I think it really makes sense. I think I can get behind it, but I feel like I need a footnote explaining the term when it first pops up, lol.

Thank you very much for sharing, I love them all, especially the ones of Black Star & Tsubaki!! ♥_♥

Thank you so much for sharing! Taking the Troika one as always, doing weird postures

[identity profile] sagesoren.livejournal.com 2009-07-28 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Holy snap. Put all those images in a line and you have a magical saturated rainbow!

A-also, what is "Afreet"? And... and...

LORD DEATH.

Come on, Funimation. Just call him "The Grim Reaper" or "That Cracked-out Guy Who Kind of Quacks Sometimes".

brb; laughing and crying at the same time

Afreet is the Arabic term for a demon-god-like creature.

Have you heard of an "ifrit"? Afreet is just a more accurate transliteration of the Arabic.

[identity profile] sagesoren.livejournal.com 2009-07-29 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
Oh! That was a good idea, then. :>

[identity profile] lmd-84.livejournal.com 2009-07-29 02:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh, not bad then. Rainbow-coloured scans and bits of Arabic, I've missed being able to read your Soul Eater posts... :)

[identity profile] ash-ka-chan.livejournal.com 2009-07-28 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow. I really like the translation. It's pretty close to the sub on my computer. I do miss Shimigami-Sama, though. (Although, Funi has started to add honorfics in dubs and subs.)

It's sad to see that Yen Press did a half-baked job on the Soul Eater manga. Now I wish that Del Ray got Soul Eater.

Oh, I don't want to give an impression that I think that YP is doing a "half-assed" job with the manga! Sorry that my post wasn't very clear. I think that YP is doing a great job with the manga; I just think that their Anglicization of terms is "half-assed" since they've left some Japanese terms untranslated.

random person is random.

[identity profile] devimelete.livejournal.com 2009-07-28 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I merely assumed that they would call him "Grim Reaper" because isn't he what he represents anyway? But when I realized that Funi called him "Lord Death" I think it's fantastic because when you get a name like "Lord Death", you think he's like the emo version of Pluto or some weird offshoot of Sandman but then you get this guy who's coked out his damn mind and and greets his students with a "Whaazuuuuuuuup?"

[identity profile] nenena.livejournal.com 2009-07-29 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, I see your point. That makes a lot of sense, actually. "Lord Death" still sounds boring to me, but at least it's extremely dignified, which... is part of the joke, I guess. ;)

I would also guess they translated it as Lord Death to also make sense of Kid's name too.

ah, I LOVE all the ones of Kid, Liz and Patty! Thanks for scanning!

......*googles "afreet"*
....OH, that IS cool!
*learned something new today*

[identity profile] stitchy-soul.livejournal.com 2009-07-29 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you for the delicious scanspam. And omygosh. Art critique dually noted. @_@ WHY would they choose that shade of yellow? Or, really, yellow at all? Blargh.

Kid is a cake. Seriously. That is REALLY REALLY purple. X_X

Afreet. I about peed my pants laughing over that one. Ifrit would've been kind of cooler, even if it's not quite as accurate. I haven't watched the Funi vids yet, but I feel like I'm missing something obvious. 'DWMA'? What's that? ^^;;;

[identity profile] sno-oki.livejournal.com 2009-07-29 07:04 am (UTC)(link)
Wooooooow! Thank you for the high-res yumminess! Although I agree with you on the colour scheme; WHAT ON EARTH WERE THEY THINKING? Do they even HAVE a colour wheel in their office or was it just a completely random jab at the screen to pick the colours? What about printing tests? EH? EH? EEEEEH? Surely that if you did a print test and saw THOSE colours you'd think "Hmm, we should probably change the ink settings on the printer."

ALSO, I am very happy to hear that you're feeling better.

[identity profile] corinn.livejournal.com 2009-07-29 01:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahaha I love how the people who mock up the Amazon preview images went "WTF designers, that's fugly," and edited the images. "No one will buy that eyesore. We have to make it more appealing. Maybe if we dial down the saturation a bunch...? And maybe shift it into the blue a bit...?"

The thing is, I can understand why they chose the inner case colors-- they coordinate with the color light the weapons flash when they transform. But... there are better shades of blue, yellow, and pink. And purple. For some reason, I think Kid's box would look awesome with a dark charcoal gray outer box. The yellow background should have been shifted slightly to actually match the star on Tsubaki's chest, or possibly gone to a bit more buttery a yellow. And I think the blue background would be better if it was a bit more cyan. But whatever. *yawns and stops babbling about colors*

[identity profile] nancy-hartigan.livejournal.com 2009-07-29 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
x.x Oh that Kid one.

But hey, maybe I'm just so used to yellows of all horrors **looks around her room -- yup, has that yellow in the mural** that Black Star's doesn't bother me too much. XD

Have fun~
