I swear to Haystack, this is the only post about My Little Pony that I am ever going to make.
The following is the actual recommendation for the new My Little Pony cartoon that one of my cohorts gave me last week:
"So imagine if Invader Zim were set in Ponyland and Dib was the main character only he was reincarnated as a girl unicorn named Twilight Sparkle but still with Dib's personality and he I mean she is the only one who sees the REALLY OBVIOUS SIGNS that there is an Evil Thing threatening Ponyville but all of the other ponies are too stupid to listen to her and this leads to both nonstop hilarity and magical-girl tag-team ass-kicking and Benny Hill parodies and a whole lot of cultural references that are going to fly right over the heads of the target audience for this show but that's okay because IT'S FREAKIN' INVADER ZIM AS A CARTOON ABOUT MAGICAL PONIES."
So this turns out to be an 100% true description of the series.
Also, THIS IS AN ACTUAL SCENE FROM AN EPISODE:
Context does not actually make that any less insane or any less completely awesome.
No but on a serious level this show is all kids of amazing. It takes everything that was crappy about the original MLP cartoon and turns it squarely on its head, with a lot of surprisingly smart writing (the ponies have complex personalities! the protagonist pony is a hyperintelligent bookworm who refuses to downplay her smarts just to be more girly!) and neat animation (look, the character design even gives the ponies individualized faces!). So yeah, it's kind of awesome. I really wish that there were more cartoons for girls like this on air right now. I wish that this had been the MLP cartoon that I had grown up with. And y'all should check this out because all of the episodes are on Youtube.
ETA: Oh, and also much in the vein of Invader Zim, there is also some amazingly inappropriately dark humor in a couple of episodes of this show, most notably an episode in which Applejack commits EARTHWORM GENOCIDE. No seriously, there's a part in episode 4 that involves Applejack attempting to bake muffins while severely sleep-deprived (long story), so she instead of adding wheat germ to her batter she instead digs up all of the earthworms in her garden, folds them into the muffin batter, and bakes them alive. And then she feeds the muffins to the other ponies and they eat them. Spike takes a muffin too, and although a barely-alive earthworm suddenly pops out of the top of his muffin and attempts to wriggle free of its doughy coffin, Spike apparently doesn't mind eating worms so HE EATS THE MUFFIN ANYWAY. With the worm still in it.
This show, you guys. This show.

I think what surprised me the most about the show (I've only seen about 3 episodes) is how well done the characters are. The thought put into all of the different personalities of the main characters is impressive; at least when compared to the original show. (Which made me instantly think of Nostalgia Chick's review of the 80's MLP film, where the emphasis on the lack of good character-development was heavy.)
Oh, and the Flash animation is really nice looking too <3.

I mean, it starts right away in the very first episode. Rarity is the most vain pony and yet she's also the most selfless! She's the only one who has any compassion for the dragon's plight and she doesn't even hesitate to cut off her own beautiful tail to help him! Look kids, it's contradictory layers of personality! And it is awesome!

I have to say its rly not my favorite kind of animation (lots of new shows seem to be animated that way nowadays), I prefer more traditional kind of stuff. Looks like it could be amusing though.

I'm not a fan of flash animation either, but it's really well done for what it is in this series. I agree that the whole thing would look much nicer with traditional animation, though.

Sun horse: "I'll bring the sun and you bring the moon, and it will all be good because everything is equal."
All the ponies: "We love you, sun-bringing horse. Let's all play and frolic and do everything when you bring us sun-happiness. Oh, its night now. Night kind of blows. Let's all go to sleep during this boring night. We'll go back to frolicking when sun-bringing horse brings back the sun in the morning."
Sure, Nightmare Moon overreacts. Maybe talking things over would have went better, but we don't actually know that. Maybe her sister is just as egotistical. Maybe her sister wouldn't be willing to share the duty of bringing up the sun. And Nightmare Moon gets imprisoned for a thousand years. To add to the insult, she's promptly forgotten? Her feeling neglected is what started her whole downward slide, but even a prophecy that includes the exact date of her vengeful return isn't enough for anyone to care to remember her.

It's pretty great that this series is making people reconsider the whole animation age ghetto thing and that it doesn't make the mistake of falling into the whole "girls love shopping and clothes and boys" trope.
Invader Zim, huh? Soooo, does that make Pinkie Pie Gir? XD
