Technically, storybird.com is a tool intended for use by foreign language and ESL teachers. The idea is that your students can browse through hundreds of gorgeous professional illustrations, choose a few with which to create their own digital storybook with, and then add their own text to explain and describe what is happening in each picture.
In reality, however, the artwork section alone is probably one of the most amazing free artwork galleries I've ever seen on the internet. Just by clicking on a picture you can also find a short biography of each artist, and access a full gallery of their other artwork as well.
Anybody can sign up for the site and browse through the gallery. It's completely free.
