Soul Eater Scanspam, Spring Cleaning Edition
Finally, some new things to scan!

Click for high-res! (Warning: 11.8 MB!!)
Last year's GanGan Art Collection print by Atsushi Ohkubo. (Yes, I found someone willing to sell me theirs for cheaper than the ridiculous actual price.) Anywhoo, this thing is printed on fuzzy, fuzzy paper, and you can see the fuzziness quite clearly in the high-res version. I apologize for that. BTW, does anybody know what this year's Ohkubo print looks like? I haven't seen any advertisements for it anywhere, but I know that one was made. Usually these things are previewed in the December issue of GanGan, but I didn't see 2009's December issue so I don't know.

Magnets by GE. I love the fact that GE licensed the Animate character designs to use on their merchandise, because now I can finally make a high-res scan of them! Previously the largest item with these character designs that I was able to scan was that sheet of tiny, tiny stickers from Japan. But now I can finally make a glorious high-res scan of these cuties. Aren't they adorable?!

Maka by Yoshiyuki Ito, the character designer for the anime series. This scan is from the storyboard book that was printed as a bonus gift for people who pre-ordered the limited edition of DVD vol.1 in Japan. I apologize for the binding blur on the top of the image.

Another bonus illustration from the same book. Now the animators are just being silly.

Souls!! I know that we've seen these before, but it's nice to have them all lined up in a row like that. Another scan from the same storyboard book.

Advertisement for manga vol. 15. PLEASE EXCUSE THE EPIC BLEEDTHROUGH. I love love love these ridiculously awesome-looking advertisements that GanGan runs for each volume of the Soul Eater manga. I just wish that GanGan didn't print said advertisements on such thin paper that's impossible to scan without also capturing epic bleedthrough!

Advertisement for manga vol. 16. Once again, PLEASE EXCUSE THE EPIC BLEEDTHROUGH. I really dig the lovely green colors on this one, though. I just wish that bleedthrough didn't ruin it. Argh.
By the way, I've scanned and posted the adverts for volumes 12, 13, and 14 previously in this journal. Just use the tags to find them.

Bootleg merchandise ahoy! This pillowcase was too shiny, slippery, and wrinkled for me to scan properly, so here, have a photograph instead. I know that it's a bootleg and that probably somebody's stolen fanart is printed on it, but it's just so cute that I couldn't resist buying it. So hey, um, does anybody happen to recognize the source of this fanart? I would like to know, if only to satisfy my own curiosity. I've seen plenty of bootleg merchandise using fanart that I recognized before, but this is the first time that I haven't been able to peg the source of the fanart right away.
EDITED TO ADD: I found the fanart source! It's by Holly! Awesome!

Pillowcase with pillow inside. Yep, still cute. Yep, still a bootleg. Yep, still worth it.
Mmm, that's all for this time. I'm still in the process of cleaning out my junk-from-Japan collection, so maybe I will have more pretty things to scanspam y'all with later!

Also, now that I'm checking my own profile, I see that I've gotten snowflake cookies that I never thanked people for. Wow, I'm a douche. But why didn't I get any notifications for these things? (*glares at livejournal*)
By the way, thank you for the snowflake cookie! And I'm sorry for being four months late about saying that. ORZ

I love that storyboard image of Maka <3 That pillow case is adorable, I want to know who the original artist is, too!

I especially loved that first one. I just couldn't stop staring at it...

HQ version of last years print makes my life happier. And the pillow case chibis are too cute for words <3
Concerning this year print I was searching around all Gangan web from December to January and I think he just used the art book cover illustration. Not sure though.

I've seen people post the preview pics of this year's Pandora Hearts and Kuroshitsuji prints, and they were both original pieces. But alas! Nobody scanned or shared the Soul Eater preview. And if Ohkubo did recycle the Soul Art cover for his print this year, then he's just being a slacker compared to the other GanGan artists. ;)

It's weird nobody posted it, neither there was some advertisement on Gangan.
From the illustrations I saw at the web FMA's (which got two) and Umineko's were new art, couldn't assure anything for the others since I don't follow them.

Ohkubo was inexcusably lazy here, by that time even the anime was finished and he didn't had to draw a color illustration per month =w=
I wonder who paid the high quantity it cost for a picture you can have in good quality as cover in the artbook.

(Anonymous) 2010-03-28 01:42 am (UTC)(link)BTW: You can try fixing those bleedthroughs with Photoshop. It's not too hard, you just have to adjust the levels.
I could do it for you if you want to. Is the least I can do for thanking your amazing recaps and scanspams ^^
no subject
But maybe Photoshop can do things PSP can't, I dunno. If you want to give it a whirl, go ahead!
The other option for correcting bleedthrough is to go through and painstakingly erase all of the bleedthrough bits manually, which I have done for color manga scans in the past. But it usually takes me hours to do a full color page properly, and today I just didn't have the time to do it. ^^;; Sorry about that.

(Anonymous) 2010-03-28 02:50 am (UTC)(link)But adjusting the levels any further would have meant sacrificing the actual colors of the scans, and I didn't want to do that.
Yeah, it happens all the time. It works pretty good with manga scans, but I have to say I never really tried doing it with color images.
I'll give it a try and if it works I'll give you the link.
Let's pray it will work!

Good luck! And thank you for taking the time to try to edit these scans. Whether it works out or not, I still appreciate the help!

(Anonymous) 2010-03-31 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)Now, with Maka's, it's a little bit harder than I expected.
And, if you look close enough, you can see that some bleedthroughs are on purpose (those white kanji from the background are overlapped in Maka's and Soul's outfits, changing to green). Shall I remove those too?
no subject
As for the Soul/Maka scan, I don't count the kanji overlapping on Soul's leg as "bleedthrough" - it's part of the graphic design, like you said - so please don't edit that out!
And thank you again for going to all of this trouble!

I can't wait for a next Artbook!
