Writers: Stop Getting This Wrong.

Crappy media portrayals of delusion, hallucinations, and psychosis.

Money quote: They’re portrayals based in stigma and really bad information. And people think this is what it is actually like because they don’t know anyone who will talk about what it’s like for them; these portrayals are all the information they have.

Edited to add, because coincidentally it just showed up on my flist: Don't be like [livejournal.com profile] pisces_sock and don't be like Skins. Comments here explain why.

Thanks for the link, that was really informative! I'm sadly underinformed about how hallucinations/delusions/etc work, except that I did figure that the Hollywood portrayals were flagrantly incorrect to some extent.

And from reading her descriptions, I disagree that these symtoms are ZOMG IMPOSSIBLE to portray in tv and film. Well maybe delusions would be tricky, but hallucinations like the ones she described should be pretty easy to depict if you actually put some effort into the storytelling. (Haha, effort and Hollywood in the same sentence. Next I'll be telling them that they should do some research. Oh me and my wacky ideas.)

Thanks for the first link, I'll keep it in mind if I ever write something related. It's made me realize I'm woefully uninformed on the subject and have been assuming delusions and hallucinations work like in fiction, which I should KNOW is unintelligent. Hellooooooo, portrayals of bipolarity. *sigh*
