The End of Tsubasa, Part 1 of 4: Chapters 227 and 228

Okay, four more chapters to recap before I'm completely caught up, and then only two more chapters to go before the end.

Let's put this manga out of its misery.

Chapter 227: In Which This Turns Into a Complete Clusterfuck

So now FWR is holding the Doom Tube in his hands and screaming about how this is the "one proof" that he has finally surpassed Clow Reed, because apparently the Doom Tube now contains the "power to cross dimensions and time" that he "stored in the ruins," so... yeah.

Hokay.

I could make my usual snarky comment about how FWR has demonstrated that he already has the power to cross dimensions and time at least six times by my count. I could make another snarky comment about how we're never going to get any explanation as to why or how "the power to cross dimensions and time" ended up concentrated in the ruins in Clow Country (which apparently FWR himself is somehow responsible for), or how the flaming fuckity fuck FWR managed to take that power and store that in the Doom Tube, or what the Doom Tube even is or how it works in the first place. I could, but I just don't care anymore.

Next, FWR screams some more about how he's going to bring Yuuko back to life. Good luck with that, bro.

Then he starts screaming at Oediporan and dead!Sakura. "Using your freedom as the price, I will turn back the hands of time!" Okay. Dunno how that works, but okay. "And then, using the princess's power, I will search until I can find a dimension in which the witch exists!" Except that he could totally do that before, without Sakura's power, but okay! "The witch MUST still be out there somewhere! She has to be!"

So, um, why did FWR try to kill Sakura all those many years ago, again?

Never mind. I should know better than to still be asking those questions by now. Forget I said anything.

So then FWR starts to suck Oediporan and dead!Sakura into the Doom Tube. "Have no fear! Until I have found the witch, you and the princess will live in the palm of my hand, unable to touch or speak to each other ever again!" Okay, why? What's with the no-touch-no-talk thing? I guess just for pure sadistic purposes? "Do not worry, though! Once I have finished with you, I will take your lives!" Well, that's the only part of this plan that actually does make any sense.

Cloney and Clone Princess, however, will have none of this! They inexplicably abandoned their adopted son Watanuki, age-reversed themselves, and sealed themselves inside the Doom Tube specifically to prevent this catastrophe from happening, remember? (NO THAT WHOLE THING STILL MAKES NO SENSE, BUT WHATEVER.) So anyway, the clones use their magic to fight back against FWR. "Ha, you're nothing but created pawns!" FWR sneers, striking back.

There's a big huge magical brawl, but in the end, when the dust has settled and the sparkles have dissipated... Oediporan and dead!Sakura are still being sucked into the tube. Crap.

But! Cloney and Clone Princess reach for their kids-cum-parents, and then push them aside, trying to take their places!

BUT! Dead!Sakura suddenly opens her eyes!

Sakura grabs at the Clone Princess and says, "Don't!"

BUT! It's too late! All four of Our Heroes are now being sucked into the Doom Tube.

BUT! Here comes the cavalry to save the day! Kurogane reaches for them! Fay reaches for them! Mokona dives toward them!

Aaaaaaaaaand... Fail.

"Sakura!!! Syaoran!!!" Mokona shouts. I dunno which Sakura or Syaoran Mokona is shouting for, and frankly, it doesn't matter anymore, as all four of them are indeed now trapped inside the Doom Tube.

Chapter 228: Big Damn Failures

"Don't," Sakura repeats, still holding Clone Princess's hand, even though it's far too late for her to be uttering her don't's right now. "I couldn't let you two be captured and separated again, the way that you were in the dream that you saw."

Clone Princess gasps with shock. "How do you know about that?!"

"Because I was always watching. Even while I was trapped in the frozen time, I saw everything through your eyes. I know all of the hardships that you've been through."

"Why did you take our hands?!" Cloney snaps, rather angrily, at his son/father Oediporan. "Didn't you realize that you would just get caught too?!"

"Yes, we realized that!" Oediporan snaps back. "And that's exactly why we did it!"

"We know how much we mean to you," Sakura goes on.

"But, it's like you said," Oediporan continues. "You have to protect the ones who are the most precious to you. And I feel the same way!"

"I feel the same way, too!" Sakura adds. "I know how difficult it will be to change the future that you saw in your dream. But if we can just--"

Meanwhile, outside of the Doom Tube, 50-story-tall FWR is mad as hell and not going to take it anymore! "Cursed clones!" he snarls at the teeny-tiny clones trapped in the Doom Tube.

ALSO Meanwhile, Kurogane and Fay are not going to be denied their Big Damn Heroes moment! "I'll smash that tube to pieces," Kurogane says, "now you use your magic to protect them!"

"Got it," Fay says, as he surrounds the Doom Tube with his magic. Or at least, tries too. I'm not really sure what happens next, based on the confusing artwork, but I think that Kurogane and Fay somehow manage to fail, as suddenly FWR is holding the Doom Tube again and smirking. "I thought I told you to stop interfering!" he says, as he blasts Kurogane and Fay backwards with a fireball.

"Hey," Mokona suddenly notices, "that Doom Tube looks just like the one that Yuuko had in her shop. It was made by Clow!"

Yeah I still dunno what the Doom Tube even is, how it works, or whether this is the same one that Yuuko had in her shop, or a different one entirely. I care little about this new bit of information that the Doom Tube was made by Clow Reed. I care very, very little at this point. Especially because that still doesn't explain anything.

"The Doom Tube cannot be destroyed without the permission of he who has drawn its contents inside!" FWR gloats, completely neglecting to follow up on Mokona's helpful segue with any actually relevant new information.

"Now, clones!" FWR declares. "I will undo your existence! I will erase you not just from this world, but from EVERY dimension!"

The inside of the Doom Tube begins to glow ominously. All four teeny-tiny incestuous teens look up at FWR fearfully.

And then FWR is blown to smithereens by a giant dragon-shaped fireball. Or is that supposed to be a hawk? Considering Kurogane's true name, I guess it's supposed to be hawk, or at least a vaguely hawk-like-looking thing. Or maybe it really is just a dragon. It's kinda hard to tell.

Anyway, Kurogane and Fay scream in tandem, "DON'T! YOU! TOUCH! THEM!"

FWR, unfortunately, is barely hurt by the attack. In fact, despite the fact that he was just eaten alive by a giant fire-dragon, he has somehow managed to emerge more or less unscathed, albeit slightly charred around the edges. FWR stands up, smirks, wipes the ash from his fluffy coat collar, and then blows Kurogane and Fay back to kingdom come.

Fay and Kurogane are left beaten and bloody, but still barely alive. "Fay! Kurogane!" Mokona cries.

Wait, isn't this, like, the fifth time that this has happened to Kurogane and Fay since the fight against FWR began? Why aren't they dead yet?! More importantly, why doesn't FWR just kill them off permanently?

The clones, Oediporan, and Sakura, having just watched helplessly as Fay and Kurogane were blown up, hold their respective others' hands, and make a vow. "To change the future that was shown in the dream will be difficult, but if we can work together... We can change the future!"

Good luck with that, kids.

I can't subject myself to any more of this today. I'm done. Two more chapters to go, and then I'll be caught up.

PS - Does anybody know when the penultimate chapter comes out? I know that the final chapter will be released on 9/30, but will the chapter before that be out on 9/16 or 9/23?

I can't believe people still read this series. I thought it was interesting at first, and especially so after hearing CLAMP was somehow combining their previous works with this. But then I lost interest, reading more of xxxHolic which became crap after a certain point. I guess it didn't help I wasn't reading Tsubasa along with it, but reading your summaries made me confused. I even tried reading the original and was even more confused by it. WHO THE HELL comes up with a character becoming his own grandfather?! That's just SICK on all levels. What happened to adorable Sakura with her funny wand and pedophilia inducing--I mean--adorable costumes?

WHO THE HELL comes up with a character becoming his own grandfather?!

Well, it worked just fine in Futurama, but that's because they were playing it for laughs, not actually trying to pull off an OMG SERIOUS AND DRAMATIC plot twist like Tsubasa did.

Personally, I'm willing to forgive the grandpa thing, if only because of its sheer unintentional hilarity. The fact that Sakura is actually Syaoran's mother, however... That's just sick.

I would call it a manga-modern day version of Oedipus

But then that would be insulting the Oedipus play.

lol yeah.

Also, Oedipus was a tragedy. Whereas CLAMP is still presenting Sakura/Syaoran as the ideal romantic happy ending. Barf.

The incredible thing is that they were able to make money with this IMO :/

lol we need waffles! Every Manga must have such a character, some random bisho villain surviving a random WTF and SUDDEN ARCHVILLAIN, who at first seems serious, but halfway through his first battle with the protagonist starts going bat shit crazy

ok for some reason I can't make the :

Because < is an html character, so you need to type & # 6 0 ; (remove the spaces) in order for livejournal to read it as < . Otherwise, livejournal just thinks that you borked the html code.

I've read up to 230, and the art stays confusing and I dunno what happens in some of the magicky scenes. But 230 has me believing that Epileptic Tree that FWR is Watanuki. Especially considering something Watanuki said over in xxxHOLiC Land.

I've read up to 230, too. And I really don't see how Watanuki could've ended up as FWR, unless there was something over in xxxHolic (which I haven't read in months and months, because it sucked) that really cinched the deal. Frankly, I can't possibly imagine that CLAMP would do that. I know that they're terrible writers, and I know that they love to give their characters tragic endings, BUT. There's a difference between "tragic" and "pointless," and if Watanuki grew up to become FWR, that would be the ultimate pointless ending for this series. It would completely undermine all of the themes that CLAMP established (and then proceeded to bludgeon readers over the head with OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN) in both Tsubasa and xxxHolic - about the power of love and friendship to overcome all obstacles (even incest), about the nobility of sacrifice, about learning to let go when it's time to let go, about learning to appreciate the love that others are willing to give to you.

Besides, CLAMP has already gone to such lengths to drag the Tsubasa characters through the mud and then magically save them all through a series of increasingly ludicrous deus ex machinas, that I really can't buy, at the point, the idea of anything less than a (poorly conceived and atrociously executed) happy ending for all non-villainous parties involved, including Watanuki.

Also, why would Watanuki become the guy who tries to kill Sakura in the first timeline? Why would he try to kill his own mother? Then he would cease to exist!
