Further bitching.

Installing Apache on Vista: A lot harder than it looks.

Also, this whole UAC thing would be a lot easier to disable if it didn't magically re-enable itself with every reboot. Fuck. I know that's NOT supposed to be happening, but it is.

And as long as I have UAC running rampant all over my computer, I'm not allowed to install Apache. Or uninstall my first borked attempt at doing so. That, too. It's not letting me fucking uninstall anything even though I'm still logged in as the admin/owner!

Don't mind me, I'll just be over here headdesking for a while.

Makes me wonder if the operating system is not shipping with service packs...

Check to see Vista is up to date with Service Pack 2. You can check this by going to that Windows logo button, control panel, system. You'll see the information under Windows edition. Mine says Windows Vista Business, copyright info, Service Pack 2.

I read awhile back that UAC features/bugs were tinkered with in Service Pack 2, and a lot of Vista systems shipped from retailers aren't even up-to-date with Vista Service Pack 1.

That was one of the first things that I checked, actually. Unfortunately I am using Service Pack 2, and I still can't completely disable UAC. It's incredibly frustrating.

Okay, that rules out that possibility. How are you switching the UAC off, though control panel?

msconfig -- tools -- disable UAC -- launch.

Windows says that the command won't take effect until I reboot, but...

Without a reboot, the "you have disabled UAC" message still pops up on my taskbar. Only not really, because UAC is still clearly working, as I'm still getting permission notifications, even when Windows says that it's off.

And of course when I reboot UAC just turns itself on again right away.

What the blue hell--

I don't know, so here's Kid's butt.

(Have you tried taking this from a different angle and looking up on special installation instructions for Apache under Vista? Kind of sounds like you did.)

Yeah, I did. Unfortunately I tried to use ye olde easy-ass installation before I realized that Vista wouldn't let me do that, so now I have a borked "apache" folder on C: and for some reason Vista-with-UAC absolutely will not let me delete or uninstall it. Most of the "how to install Apache on Vista" websites that I've looked at specifically state that I have to start clean and completely uninstall any of my first attempts at getting Apache on here. Which I can't do. And I tried following the instructions on this page (http://senese.wordpress.com/2007/06/06/installing-apache-on-windows-vista/) without uninstalling what I have, and of course it didn't work.

Your icon is kind of how I feel right now. :(

After two days of tampering with this, though, I'm ready to just give up and go without Apache for a few months. Hopefully when/if I upgrade to Windows 7 I can get this taken care of.

TBH, I wouldn't even use Vista if the operating system wasn't completely free from school. I'm already lined up to the 7 upgrade as well... I just regret not taking advantage of trying out the release candidate.

Also, lol, I could probably stack up the number of Vista certification books out there on my own desk. Its like Microsoft gave up already. They've got Windows 7 cert books out already, though!

That's interesting, as in my case UAC doesn't re-enable itself after a reboot, it only says it is disabled which is dangerous. I wonder why our computers react so differently. Which version of Vista do you have?

"Home Premium" whatever that means. I dunno which numbered version. It's definitely using Service Pack 2, though.

Mine is Home Premium SP1. When the notification appears, there is a red shield icon. Don't click on the notification, close it, click on the shield. The security panel (I'm not sure what the exact name is as my Vista is not only a Vista, it's also Russian, which I hate as all the tips are written in English) should appear, and there is a line, coloured in red, saying that UAC is disabled. Then it is really disabled.

Yeah, I have that red shield icon, and the red message in the security panel telling me that UAC is disabled... but it's still not really disabled, because it's still telling me that I don't have "permission" to uninstall anything.

Like I said, I give up. I'll just suck it up and live without Apache until I can upgrade to Windows 7. But I do appreciate all of your help. Thank you!

NO IDEA what UAC is but GOOD LUCK getting your comp fixed.
