Cheer for the day: July editions of Japanese toy magazines!

I desperately needed some cheering up this evening. So here are some things that cheered me up when I saw them in the July issues of Hobby Japan and Dengeki Hobby.

Soul Eater. This series is so ridiculously awesome you guys, I do not even have words to describe it. At first I didn't want to watch it, because I thought to myself, "Oh, it's just a Bleach rip-off." And you know, that's right: It is a Bleach rip-off. It is also a thousands times more entertaining, inventive, and absorbing than Bleach is. Dontcha just hate it when the rip-off turns out to be a vast improvement over the original?

Bonus awesome: This is one of the few shounen fighting anime/manga series that actually has a female protagonist. And an amazing one at that. The main boy character is her sidekick (or rather, her anthropomorphized weapon), instead of the other way around. For a change.

Bonus bonus awesome: The TV animation is wildly kooktastic, and the manga artwork is pretty sweet, too.

So why does this toy appeal to me, other than the fact that it is associated with Soul Eater and therefore awesome? Well, look at him. Look at his butt. How often do you see a male character posed like that on a piece of Japanese merchandise? Not often. I'd even venture to say never before.

The first Wagaya no Oinarisama PVC figure. The series was very meh for me, but wow, isn't that just gorgeous?

I do wish her face didn't have that inexplicably sad expression, though.

New Belldandy PVC. Granted, we just recently got a very lovely PVC figure of Belldandy flying. So I dunno about this one. I dunno. Her face looks weird. But still, it's Belldandy! Yay!

HOLY SHIT, TAKARA. Wow. WOW. Just look at those!

Here's a closeup of the Cutie Honey doll, from the Takara website:

And she's wearing such a great version of her costume, too!

Hmmm, I might have to actually invest in one of those. I still think that Volks is the superior doll maker, and I covet their Saber like you would not believe. But one significant advantage that Takara has over Volks is that their dolls are much, much more affordable. ^^;;

Speaking of Cutie Honey...

So there's going to be a photobook for Cutie Honey the Live. Oh dear, I'm conflicted about whether to plop down money on that. I do desperately love the Cutie Honey costume in The Live, even though I don't like the show itself. So maybe the photobook will be a good investment for me, since I'll be getting pages and pages of glossy pics of Honey in costume, without having to, you know, actually sit through anything like the actual TV show.

I will say, however, that Honey's hairstyle in The Live bugs the hell out of me. It's neither cute like it was in the movie, nor wild and crazy like it is in all of the anime versions. That hair? That hair looks like, well, a perfectly normal, respectable haircut that a real Japanese woman would actually wear. The problem is that Cutie Honey's flaming red hair shouldn't look like a normal, respectable haircut that a real Japanese woman would actually wear. Seriously. Some of my co-workers wear their hair just like that, except, you know, not bright red. Still, argh. Cutiey Honey in The Live desperately needs a better hairstyle.

Fate Figma. 'Nuff said.

A few of the hundred-or-so resin kits that debuted at Wonderfest '08. (This pic, and this pic alone, is a clickable thumbnail.) Gawk at them if you can, but don't expect to ever see them in retail outlets. Oh Japan and your underground resin kit culture. You exist only to tease us, don't you?

I really need to make another Haruhi scans dump. I have such a backlog piled up, it's not even funny.

I know a person who owns two Urd/WoE kits which are just slightly differently coloured. When I've heard of it, all I wanted was to commit a crime... Another has one, along with a huge collection of other Urd kits. Both live in America, so it's pretty difficult for me to rob them. Sigh. But seriously, why there are so many awesome things unavailable for average fans?

Soul's pose is unique, but I'm loving Maka's expression in this toy collection.

I saw scan of the rest of the page and I want the Death the Kid and Thompson sisters one too. :D

You got me curious about Soul Eater. I really wanted to like Bleach, 'cause it's about demon hunters (and who doesn't love a good demon hunter anime), but I failed to care about any of the characters. Well, Rukia was mildly interesting, but she didn't pull me in after 4 episodes, so I gave up. Perhaps I'll try Soul Eater at some point.
