This week's Tsubasa - Chapter 198
Y HALO THAR, Kurogane and Fay.
The chapter opens in the present, which is actually the frozen past of Clow Country, but whatever. Syaoran, Mokona, Kurogane, and Fay are still inside the ruins, standing around and looking grim.
Mokona asks Syaoran if, after that time that he talked to Yuuko, he ever saw his parents again.
Syaoran says that no, he didn't.Except for the fact that Sakura IS his mom, but we won't waste time dwelling on that right now. Anyway, Syaoran explains that he stayed at Yuuko's store until his wounds healed, and then promptly returned to Clow Country. Without saying goodbye to his parents? Apparently. I guess.
Mokona hugs Syaoran and cries. Like, cries tears. Wow. I never realized how much pathos could be communicated with just a few sketchy tears leaking from Mokona's squinty little eyes.
Then Syaoran explains to Kurogane and Fay that it's important for them to know about his past so that they can understand the coming battle. He also adds that, since he already saw both of their pasts, it's only fair to tell his past to the people that he's been traveling with, and to let them judge for themselves.
Kurogane tells Syaoran to continue.
Then the flashback starts again. Goddammit. That was probably the last that we'll see of Kurogane and Fay for the next several months. Well, at least CLAMP finally threw us a bone, even if it was only five pages of Kurogane and Fay standing around and talking. Thrilling!
Anyway, back to the flashback.
Syaoran pops back into Clow Country. He's in the ruins, and Sakura is standing right in front of him. Sakura is all like, "ZOMG SYAORAN!!!" And then she's all like, "So like my purification ceremony ended seven days ago and now it's okay for you to touch me..."
Kinky.
Syaoran, however, is looking at her like he's going to cry. Eyes all watery, lip trembling, and everything. The reason is that he can see the Death Seal that's been put on Sakura, in the form of those black wings sprouting from her chest.
But he grabs her and hugs her nevertheless.
Sakura explains that, on the last day of her purification, she seems to have lost consciousness for a few moments, and when she opened her eyes, Syaoran was gone. She didn't get to say goodbye to him. Ever since then, she'd been hanging out in the ruins every day, clinging to the slim hope that she might get to see him again...
Wow.
Syaoran and Sakura walk back to the palace, hand in hand. Syaoran thanks Sakura for waiting for him.
At the palace, Nadeshiko is waiting for them. She is totally not surprised to see that Syaoran has returned, of course. Nadeshiko tells Sakura to run ahead and tell her father that Syaoran is back, then corners Syaoran so that she can speak to him alone.
Syaoran doesn't want to let go of Sakura's hand. D'awwwwwwwww. (Or maybe he just doesn't want to be left alone with Nadeshiko, because really, who wants to be subjected to several pages of Nadeshiko's vaguely ominous doomspeak?) But anyway, Sakura eventually leaves, and Nadeshiko officially has Syaoran cornered.
She wastes no time in getting to the doom and gloom. "I know about the Death Seal. Right now, I'm the only person in Clow Country who can see it. Sakura herself doesn't even know about it." Nadeshiko then explains that the reason that Syaoran can see it is because FWR wants him to see it.
God, FWR is a total fucking bastard.
Syaoran tells Nadeshiko that he is determined to save Sakura, blah blah blah. Note that neither Syaoran nor Nadeshiko even remotely consider the possibility of, you know, informing Sakura of the Death Seal that's stuck on her chest like a great big invisible "KICK ME" sign. Oh joy! More people conspiring to keep Sakura ignorant of vital information that immediately concerns her well-being and survival. Great. Just great.
