This week's Tsubasa - Chapter 181

Recap: Last week, real!Syaoran (who is suddenly and mysteriously in love with real!Sakura), Fay, and Kurogane asked Yuuko to send them to wherever both Sakura are. Keep in mind that one of the two Sakura is DEAD, but maybe Syaoran's got a necrophilia kink, I don't know. I wouldn't put it past clone!Syaoran. But anywhoo...

Yuuko reveals that Watanuki already payed the price for Our Heroes' final jump, when he gave up the memories of his past and his parents. Damn, Yuuko. I realize that for Watanuki this is pretty tragic price, but honestly...? It's pretty cheap compared to what she's asked for before.

Okay, so remember a gajillion years ago, in xxxHolic, when Yuuko traced FWR's whereabouts by following his soul-collectors? Yeah. So Yuuko's all like, "I know where FWR is." And Kurogane's like, "OMG YOU KNEW WHERE FWR WAS WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME I WANT TO KILL HIM SO TOTALLY BAD LIKE REALLY BAD" and Yuuko's like, "Um, I only found out recently." Note that this "recently" covers at least a year in xxxHolic time, and much more than a year for us readers stuck in real-time.

Anyway, Fay goes all Captain Exposition (again) and explains, "If you traced FWR's whereabouts, then you revealed your location to him, too." Well, forgive both me and Yuuko for being not terribly concerned. For one, this tracing happened a year ago, and Yuuko's still looking pretty safe. For another thing, all FWR does is sit around and explain plot points in long and vaguely sinister monologues. Sure, he was active in the past (killing Kurogane's mother, killing the real Fay), but since the beginning of the series he hasn't really done anything. Well, he killed Xing Huo. But she basically set herself up on a suicide mission anyway, so that doesn't much count. I dunno. It's just that, so far, FWR hasn't really done anything to demonstrate that there's any reason for somebody like Yuuko to be afraid of him.

Speaking of which, next we cut to FWR, doing what he does best - expository monologues. Well, okay, he's talking to Kyle. He explains to Kyle that - dun dun dun! - the real Sakura's body has vanished.

So! Now we have the soul of real!Sakura, presumably trapped somewhere. And the body of clone!Sakura, whose soul is really really really really really really (really really really) dead, but whose body is still for some reason perfectly A-OK.

Suddenly an obvious solution to both Sakura's problems presents itself. I hope that CLAMP doesn't go that route, though, because that would be a huge narrative cop-out.

Then there's some more talkity talk talk in Nihon Country. Seishirou, Kamui, Subaru, and Fuuma effectively bow out of the story. Their little subplot is left open-ended, but at the same time, I doubt that we'll see them again. So I guess it will just stay open-ended. I would like to be wrong about that, but with only 19 chapters left, I highly doubt that CLAMP can squeeze them in for another appearance.

Next we have basically five pages of Kurogane, Fay, and Syaoran reminiscing about their times with Sakura. The purpose of this flashback is to drive home the point that Sakura is really really really really really really (really really really) dead, and I guess I'm supposed to feel sad about this, but the writing has gotten to off-the-wall that I just can't bring myself to care.

The chapter ends with a page of Syaoran remembering his childhood with Sakura, except WHAT THE HELL REAL!SYAORAN YOU WERE TOTALLY NOT THERE DURING REAL!SAKURA'S CHILDHOOD and I guess this is supposed to reinforce the fact that he is suddenly and mysteriously in love with real!Sakura but still ugh ugh ugh.

Questions:

1. Where the hell is clone!Syaoran? It looked like he followed Kyle into hyperspace two chapters back, but that might have just been confusing artwork.

2. Is CLAMP really going to be able to pull off an ending in an even 200 chapters? If the pacing of this week's chapter is any indication of what's to come, I doubt it.

I swear, if CLAMP makes the clones and the originals melt into one each that would be one of the most pointless things ever.
