Pichi Pichi Pitch translated manga vol. 4

Long-overdue, I know. But here's a list of changes and mistakes in Pichi Pichi Pitch volume 04. Basically, the same as before: If I had to compare my own translation to William Flanagan's, I will say that there were a LOT more mistakes in my own translations that there are in this professional version.

But I'm still going to nitpick the professional version, so nyah.

Page 6 - Kaito's parents write that they discovered him on a spring morning. In the Japanese version, it was autumn. Yes, this is the most minor nitpick ever. Kaito's parents also write that they found him "in the sunlight." Actually, the Japanese text says "wrapped in a bright light," which is a reference to the supernatural light that baby Kaito is glowing with (which you can see shown in the artwork). That supernatural glow is referenced again in the next page.

Page 21 - Typo! For some reason there's an exclamation point on Kaito's cheek. Oops, that wasn't there in the original! Also, is it "a hand-knit scarf" or "a hand-knitted scarf"? Which is more correct? I'm asking because I have no idea. I used the former, Del Rey used the latter.

Page 54 - When Sara appears in human form in front of her nursemaid for the first time, the nursemaid asks, "Sara-sama, do you know who that is..?" Which is a little bit obtuse, since her line in Japanese is Sara-sama, sono sugata wa! ("Sara-sama, what happened to your body?!"). The idea is to communicate that the nursemaid is shocked to see Sara with legs instead of a fishtail. Not that she mistakes Sara for someone else.

Page 56 - Sara calls herself a useless princess. In the original, she called Gakuto a useless prince.

Page 67 - In the Del Rey version, Kaito's doesn't drop the "tomorrow" bomb like he does in the original. He doesn't even mention when he's leaving.

Page 89 - Mitsuki does not identify Sara by name in the original.

Page 123 - Sara says that she must "look after" Mitsuki. In the original, she told Mitsuki to open his eyes and look.

Page 171 - Kaito says "I'll never give it to him!" Except that in the original, this word bubble was Kaito telling Lucia, "Don't give it to him!" Because Lucia is the one holding the pearl that Gakuto just asked for.

Oh, and one more thing: Hippocampus versus Hippokampus. I don't know Greek, so I don't know which would be the more correct way to write the word in roman letters... But I do know that Encyclopedia Mythica and Wikipedia both use "Hippocampus," so I'll stick with that for now. I can understand wanting to use the "Hippokampus" spelling, though. Because I still think of "Hippocampus" as part of the human brain, and I would hazard to guess that other manga readers would too.

Coming next week: Volume 05. Hoo-boy, this is going to be a doozy. I mean, indigo, argh!

Whoa, nice timing.

I go today to check your site, and I find that you updated again. Lucky~

Doesn't seem to be much mistakes this time around. No idea on Hippocampus/Hippokampus, but "hand-knit" sounds better than "hand-knitted," though not necessarily grammatically correct. Both sound like they can work, anyway...

Indigo? Y'mean, Noelle (or however her name is spelled) is called that, and not Deep Blue? Meh...

Since I only imported the first four volumes, I WILL have to buy the fifth and on... And still no sign of the anime. Bah.

Well, it was nice seeing you again. Have a nice summer now.

Wow, it seems there were a lot of random mistakes this time. I was disappointed about the indigo, too. :/ Looking forward to your volume 5 review!

Thanks! And to be fair, there were *more* mistakes in my translation (a lot more!) than I found in Del Rey's version. I've since gone back and corrected my own mistakes, though.

...What?

I can't remember any scene of Lucia dancing around Kaito, either in the anime or in the manga. I'm not sure what you're talking about.

Umm, yes she does.

I'd post scans, but right now my manga is in storage.
