It's so weird to me that I'm old enough now to be able look back on things and say, "You know, I remember when...there was no way in hell any U.S. comic book would possibly entertain the notion that a character might be attracted to another character that might possibly be of the same sex."

JP didn't even come out of the closet until 1992, even though John Bryne (who created the character in 1979) said that he was always intended to be gay, although editorial mandate meant that he could never actually say so explicitly, just slip hints past the censors.
