Lightning-round Soul Eater mini-recap before bed.

Dunno if I'm going to be able to recap fully this weekend, so here are some spoilers anyway.

SE 85: Very short chapter this month, only nineteen pages, and it's literally nothing but Justin vs. Tezca. if you've seen the spoilers then you've pretty much seen the whole chapter already.

Not! 4: A student reports to Sid that a "Traitor" was spotted wandering around Death City. The kanji for "Traitor" literally reads "challenger for a practice match" so I'm guessing based on the following few pages of dialogue that this is something/somebody that occassionally shows up in Death City solely for the purpose of testing their might against Shibusen students? But anyway, there have been far too many of them appearing in Death City recently, as Sid comments that this is the sixteenth incident of a Traitor appearing this month alone, and this is an unusually high number. Um, maybe it's something in the water? Clay and Akane overhear and ask if they can go defeat the Traitor as a training exercise.

So Clay and Akane go and find the Traitor, who asks them rather creepily, "Did you sleep well last night?" Clay expositions that Akane doesn't have to kill the Traitor, he just has to get the Traitor into a checkmate position and then the Traitor is supposed to give up and go away. Then we finally get to see Akane wielding Clay in combat. (To absolutely nobody's surprise, Clay is a claymore.) Akane defeats the Traitor by pinning it with the point of his sword, and tells the Traitor to give up and retreat. Instead, the Traitor tries to kill himself by leaning forward and forcing the tip of Clay's blade into his skull. Akane is understandably freaked out about this and punches out the Traitor before anything Really Bad can happen.

Meanwhile, back at Shibusen, Tsugumi is retconning her own origin story through a bunch of think-bubbles. And suddenly, Maka! Maka explains to Tsugumi and Company that Shibusen students get to choose their own school uniforms. Maka tells Tsugumi that she's cute and Tsugumi explodes from gay. Yes, Soul is there with Maka, but he has no lines. Clay and Akane show up and Akane tells Sid that there was Something Wrong with the Traitor that they were sent to fight.

Sid forces the students to finally decide upon their partners, so Tsugumi ends up with Me-Me while Sid pairs off Anya with another boy (another new character?) who refuses to speak to her. Anya is super-pissed about this, and is in the middle of pouting around the city when she is approached by a creepy guy with a long fingernail who asks her, "Did you sleep well last night?" Chapter ends.

ETA: Added a lot more detail to the Not! spoilers, having now read the chapter more carefully than I did at midnight last night. ;)

So if you've seen the spoilers then you've pretty much seen the whole chapter already.

Had a feeling. I hope we eventually get into why Justin went apeshit in the first place sometime soon. Backstory would be, like, amazing, but we know how much Ohkubo looooves backstory. When you get any in Soul Eater its like, fucking godsend.

Even though im sure the chapter wont be anything god tier, im sure your recap will be more so d('-'d)

Well, at least Not! sounds like its starting to get some plot rolling [/rubs hands together] Still, only 19 pages for the the main SE, was it because he was putting more into Not! this month or is something up that I'm not aware of...?

Either way you make every recap entertaining as can be no matter how disappointing the chapter is. Your snarkery always brings a smile to my face C:

So Uncool

Oh man, Maka-Tsugumi interaction. Is Soul involved this time because if so, I'm eagerly awaiting the "Wow, you're lucky to have such a cool partner Soul-kun!" and the following "..." from Soul I keep imagining XDDDD. (Maka in the background screaming "HA! WHO'S UNCOOL NOW!? PUT THAT IN YOUR JUICE BOX AND SUCK IT!")

Why the shortness?

(Anonymous) 2011-04-22 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw man, I was really hoping we would see more of Crona, Maka and Soul. Why is this month's chapter so short? Is this Ohkubo's way of building suspense? Whatever, I just hope that the fight between Justin and Tezca will rock and that the next chapter will include more awesomeness instead (and more of Soul and Maka).

I am really looking forward to your recap even if I sometimes feel like I'm going to drown in all the snark :)

I thought we already got plenty of the backstory about Justin? The big unsubtle moral of the story being that because Justin worked alone (and in general didn't "connect" with other people - i.e. his non-friendship with Tezca) he wasn't actually as strong against insanity as everybody thought that he was, so when he encountered the Clown during his search for Asura he succumbed to it completely.

I mean, it fits with the general theme that Ohkubo keeps bludgeoning us with in everybody else's little character arcs. Thinking that you don't need others or wanting to be strong alone = weakness, whereas accepting that other people can help you become stronger together than you would be alone = true strength.

Not! was ten pages shorter than normal this month, too.

Your snarkery always brings a smile to my face C:

Why thank you! ^_^

Soul is there during that scene, but Tsugumi never interacts with him. Soul literally has one line in the entire chapter, and that is "Okay."

[identity profile] chiikaboom.livejournal.com 2011-04-22 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Mm i wouldnt really define that as backstory though. It explains probably why he fell into insanity, but whatever, I just would like it better if Ohkubo explored his characters more thats all.

I don't know why this month's chapter is so short, and I think it's pretty pointless to speculate about the reasons. It could be anything from "Ohkubo had other important stuff to do" to "it was editorial mandate" to "one of Ohkubo's assistants got carpal tunnel" to "velociraptors." We'll probably never know why.

This month we're not entirely moving away from the Crona storyline, since the Justin vs. Tezca confrontation takes place near Crona's big blood-bubble. Justin sought out the black blood bubble because he wants to know more about the black blood's abilities. (Remember, Justin is one of the few cast members who has never met Crona before.)

I am really looking forward to your recap even if I sometimes feel like I'm going to drown in all the snark :)

LOL thank you! :)

I vote velociraptors.

In all honesty though I just assumed it had to do with the big ass earthquake. I also read somewhere that because of the disaster it caused damage to the paper mills, and now ink and paper are in low supply.

That makes sense. Considering that essentials like food and gas are still in short supply all over Japan, I wouldn't be surprised if there were other shortages too. And also since power outages are still causing rolling blackouts all over Tokyo it also wouldn't be surprising if a lot of magazines printed this month were thinner than usual.

Okay. The next person who complains about the chapter being short is officially an asshole.

"no fair" my ass.

Just wanted to say that I love reading your commentaries! Excited about chapter 4! :)

[identity profile] vega-jd.livejournal.com 2011-04-23 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the mini-recap! The Justin vs Tezca fight looks pretty Nightmare-Fuely, and Not! seems to be getting its own plotline of sorts. Yay, action! Poor Anya, I hope her Random Partner will end up being useful.

Pfft, faaaaail Soul, fail. Oh well.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-23 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
The SE Not! chapter sounds good!

And in the case of the regular soul eater, well... maybe we'll get an explanation to why enrique wasn't at the noah battle.
I'm thinking tezca just threw a banana into a bush and ran away while he was eating it.

[identity profile] primi-chan.livejournal.com 2011-04-23 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, look's like Not!'s getting a plot going. I sincerely look forward to what scary shit Ohkubo's gonna' put those four through. And I'm still hoping Anya get's to be Tsugumi's partner.

And yay! Maka and Soul appear~ XD Waiting for the day Tsugumi works up the courage to ask Maka out.

I hope Japan's able to get their economy up and running again.

Thanks for the Not! recap!

Thanks for the recap! =D
I've been waiting for it for days~

[identity profile] kamdensl.livejournal.com 2011-04-24 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the quick recap! I can't wait to read both chapters in full! Although there is still some residual disappointment in the lack of KidLizPatty, I do love Tezca quite a bit, and I'm thrilled to see a Death Scythe VS Death Scythe fight with no meisters involved. :D As of recent chapters, Tezca is the only fail-proof adult (I hope I didn't just jinx it for him).

I'm a bit sad that Tsugumi wasn't paired with Anya, but I was expecting it. Poor Anya.

Oh no wait fuck I'm a dumbass. Justin met Crona the first time that both of them fought Giricco.

(Yes, replying to myself!)

Thank you very much for the mini recap~! ^_^

I'm really getting excited for Not! now. Was that a final decision? Anya is permanently this new characters meister? T_T I was more Tsugumi and Anya, and I was kind of hoping for Okubo to stretch out this whole two meisters, one weapon thing, but hey, i guess you can only keep that going for so long…….

As for Soul Eater, I was kind of looking forward to this Crona battle, but I'm also curious about the whole Justin thing. A part of me really wants him back on the good side, because I really just love him as a character, but he seems like a pretty good villain too? i guess?

Anyway, thanks again!
