MLP G1 vs. G4
Last week's episode gave us what has to be BY FAR the single best shout-out to the G1 ponies that I've seen yet in this series. BEHOLD:

THAT'S THE GODDAMN ORIGINAL TWILIGHT
who is now canonically TWILIGHT SPARKLE'S MOTHER
there isn't enough FUCK YEAH in the world for this
So now we have to add another one to the list of "deliberate shout-outs to the G1 series" that we've seen in Friendship is Magic. And for those of you who are rusty on your G1-fu, here's the tally so far:
1. Applejack and Spike, who are (the only, I think?) characters directly imported from the original series. Well, at one point Twilight Sparkle mentioned that she knew a pony named "Moondancer" but said pony has yet to actually appear onscreen.
2. The plot of the FiM pilot episodes, which somewhat mirrors the plot of the G1 pilot, mostly in that the villain wants to create a night that never ends and then is defeated by a freakin' magic rainbow.
3. Angel Bunny, who is a shout-out to the Moochik's long-suffering bunny sidekick featured in quite a few G1 episodes.
4. And of course, now we have the Twilight shout-out, which is pretty much too awesome for words.
Now all we need are Seaponies making an appearance in Friendship is Magic and my life will be complete.
Speaking of which... Attention MLP fandom: Can we please be stopping with the G1 bashing? Yeah, I know that most of y'all are in your early 20s which means that you're probably more familiar with the G2 and (*shudder*) G3 stuff, which, yes, is all mindblowingly awful and deserves every bit of scorn that you can heap upon it. Little girls hated the G3 stuff, so yeah, it really is that bad. But just because the *older* pony stuff is crap doesn't mean that the *oldest* pony stuff is crap.
Far from it, actually.
The G1 MLP cartoons had their glaring flaws - namely, that there were too many ponies with interchangeable "personalities" (or lack thereof) and that only the male ponies were allowed to have careers or hobbies - but what the series lacked feminism it made up for in sheer action-packed epic fantasy awesomeness. The G1 ponies only occasionally had problems like "having a fight with your friends at a sleepover" or "a friend of a friend is kind of a bully." More often than not they were too busy actually fighting evil forces and saving Ponyland from certain doom. Oh, and did the Big Bad of the Week suddenly turn good and become the ponies' friend as soon as s/he was defeated? Rarely. Most of the epic G1 cartoon episodes ended with the ponies killing the Big Bad. Hey, remember that episode that ended with the Princess Ponies attacking the Lava King with their magic wands until he exploded into a million pieces?! Yeah. The G4 ponies are great and all, but they have yet to make anybody explode. Or to fight any evil with any force more deadly than the Power of Friendship.
Not that I think that the G1 cartoon is *better* than Friendship is Magic or anything. FiM's focus on real-life problems makes for every bit as much awesome entertainment as the G1 cartoon's focus on epic fantasy does. But the point is that the G1 cartoon wasn't bad. And I think it's a little ironic that certain corners of the new Pony fandom are very quick to bash the original cartoon and gush about how FiM is soooooo much better... while at the same time furiously writing grimdark FiM fanfics and opining about how there's not enough action or adventure in the new series.
Uh, guys? We already have a grimdark version of MLP full of epic action and adventure. It's called "the original series."
