Sing along with Krishna!

via [livejournal.com profile] carbonicgirl

There's a computer animated movie about Krishna.

The 3D animation in Krishna: aayo natkhat nadlal looks... well, creepy beyond belief. Seriously, do watch the Krishna video previews (there are four of them) linked above. So much about the movie looks great: the music sounds great, they got the world's cutest child voice for Krishna, Kamsa is appropriately scary, and there is much stealing of women's clothing. But that animation! Ugh! The lack of facial expressions, the stiff, zombie-like movements, the utter lack of any sense of joy, spontaneity, or sensuality in the Krishna/Radha scenes... Boo. In this version, apparently Krishna knows only one dance, and that is The Robot.

Apparently this project was inspired by the success of 2005's two unbelievably awesome and adorable 2D animated movies:

  • Hanuman, the first full-length animated feature ever produced in Bollywood.

  • Krishna: The Birth, which is only 75 minutes long, and is apparently first in a series of three additional upcoming Krishna animated movies. (The titles are Krishna The Makhan Chor, Krishna in Vrindavan, and Krishna Kills Kamsa for the alliteration win.)

Both of these movies are adorably cute, and yet both of these movies suffer from atrociously low animation quality. Okay, maybe I shouldn't be too harsh, because in-house animation is a "new" thing in Bollywood, and the technology is still rough around the edges. At least Hanuman and Krishna: The Birth made up for their low animation quality by overloading on cuteness, good storytelling, awesome music, and that kick-arse music video with cute little kids dancing around in Hanuman masks.

Krishna: aayo natkhat nadlal looks like it may have all of that too, but the sheer weirdness of seeing bad 3D animation keeps getting in the way. Bad 2D animation can be charming at best, or at least not get too much in the way of a movie's other good points at worst. Bad 3D animation can creep out a viewer in ways you would not believe.

(And even so, it's hard not to compare the bad 2D animation of Hanuman and Krishna: The Birth to the *fantastic* Ghibli-esque animation used in 1992's The Legend of Prince Rama, which was not produced in India. Search for "Hanuman" on Youtube and you'll find clips from The Legend of Prince Rama. Compare that to the animation in Hanuman especially, and it's kind of sad.)

Virgin Comics, if you ever plan on making that Ramayana cartoon that you have those teaser images for on your website, I shall eagerly await it. In the meantime, I suppose I will hunt down a copy of this Krishna business anway, but after sitting through the preview videos I think that the Uncanny Valley will be getting too much in the way of my enjoyment of it.

ETA: NEW REVIEWS OF ALL OF THE ABOVE MOVIES HERE.

you know, i ordered a few Ramayana and Devi comics from that website roughly two months ago, and still haven't gotten them yet, so i wouldn't recommend ordering, unless you have better luck with them.

i saw a few previews for that movie when i was in India this summer. it does seem somewhat interesting, but the animation isn't any worse than, say, this Pandavas movie that someone came up with. the graphics and animation are only marginally better than this Krishna movie, and what's worse, they completely dumbed down the names, case in point, Duryodhan became Duri, Dhritarashtra became Dhiru, and a host of other simplifications. not to mention, they messed with the story here and there as well, trying to cram all the minor stories together into one.

if you do manage to hunt down the movie, do let me know what you think of it. after my bad experience with the Pandavas, i'm disinclined to trust animated movies, hehe, other than Hanuman of course.

You mean this movie (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0285868/)? I'd never heard of it before, but after your description I don't intend to see it. (Or maybe I will because of, you know, Trainwreck Syndrome.) But did they seriously do that with the names?! "Duri" and "Dhiru"?! That sounds like some squealy teenage anime fangirls got a hold of the story and renamed everyone. I can imagine Yudhisthira renamed as "Yuyu" and Draupadi simply referred to as "Polyandry-tan." Then we would get the pairing names like "Karnodhana" and it would all go to hell from there. And by "hell" I mean "fanfiction":

"Yuyu!"
"Duri-chan!"
(*hatesex*)
(*weeping*)
(*insert Evanescence lyrics here*)

Thanks for the heads-up. I hadn't ordered any yet, but maybe I'll see if they're available through some other website or retailer. I've also had bad experiences trying to order things from a company's website before, only to try ordering the same thing a couple months later from a different online store and getting it sent right to me without delay.

if you do manage to hunt down the movie, do let me know what you think of it.

This movie is really hard to find! It's an R2 release and normally Amazon.co.jp stocks a lot of R2 Hindi movies, but neither Krishna nor Hanuman is listed yet. I've found them in plenty of other online stores, but alas, I no longer live in American, and it's darn near impossible to find a store that will ship to Japan.

This may not be completely off-topic, but I found the Krishna soundtrack at my local Indian store today. I wasn't able to get it today, but I too found out that movie is extremely hard to find. From what I've seen, I believe the movie didn't get pampered with the high budget 2005's Hanuman had. Heck, in only a few months after its release, region-free DVDs (which I suspect are bootlegs, but nicely made bootlegs) were available. So yeah, I haven't found a copy of Krishna yet, but I have motivated my mom to help me hunt for one though.

The animation of this movie is rather creepy, but you haven't seen cheesy until you've seen the previously-air serial adaptation of it on Sony TV. I admit the series was on a low budget in a time slot a lot of people don't watch TV, but... did they need to use a rotating piece of paper to show an elephant being thrown in mid-air? D: Other than that, it was a pretty good serial, and I liked Radha's actress.

Awww, but I love cheesy! I love the Chopra Mahabharata serial, with the absolutely hysterical "special effects." Cheesy, I can handle. Creepy, I can't.

Aw man, I want the soundtracks! I want the Hanuman soundtrack especially, but like I said, I haven't found it anywhere online that will ship to Japan. I'm sure that it exists somewhere *in* Japan seeing as how there are Indian neighborhoods in some major cities, but I'm pretty far away from any major cities. Also, that English song from the Krishna previews sounds amazing.

Yeah, I figured you meant "America."

Oh lord, you made my day with that Karnodhana comment. Now I'm trying to come up with a name for Arjuna and Krishna. As for fanfiction, I'm amazed that there isn't more out there. As of now, I haven't found a single piece of fan fiction about the Mahabharata, and in my opinion, what with Karnodhana and Krishuna (unless you can come up with a better name for that pairing =D), there's so much there that fan fictions could be written about.

I also ordered a few from legionofcomics.co.uk, and those haven't arrived either, so I'm thinking that it's a publisher problem or something. I've heard that bookstores in India stopped carrying them because the demand isn't all that great, so maybe that's the problem.

As for Trainwreck Syndrome, the only way you'll be able to sit through that movie and not claw out your eyes in the end, is if you're drunk or something. That movie was just... *shudder* Only a shudder can describe how I felt about it, heh.

Ah yes, the cheesy special effects. The arrows were the best part, in my opinion.

Krishuna! I love it!

Hmm, if the comics are really that hard to get a hold of, maybe I'll just wait until they show up on ebay or in an Amazon Z-shop or something, 'cause at least that way I'll know that I'm buying an actual physical copy that will be sent to me soon.

Correction, the comics that I had ordered from Virgin's website just arrived today. So now, it's Legion of Comics I must get after.

I'd wait until they show up on ebay as well, far more reliable.
