Reasons explained here but really I shouldn't have to be explaining this. It should be obvious on so many levels. 1. Don't take other people's work without asking them first. No, asking them after the fact ("I already did this, I hope you don't mind!") doesn't count. 2. Recap post = mocking = not a direct translation of the chapter. What, the part where I quoted Noah talking about rolling around naked in his comic book collection didn't tip you off?!
Goddamn freakin' entitled fandom. This is not okay.
Arrrrrgh so much entitlement in this fandom. I know that y'all can't stand to wait more than a few days for your beloved FREE, PIRATED manga chapter to be posted online, but seriously, get over yourselves. I know that some of y'all want to be fandom heroes, but this is not the way to do it. P.S. - If you can't read Japanese, then maaaaaaaybe you shouldn't be trying to make a scanslation in the first place! Or at least, you shouldn't be trying to do it alone.
Edited to add:OH NO YOU DIDN'T. Okay, I'm trying to contact the mangafox admins to get this shit taken down. Hopefully it works. Nevermind, it's gone now. The OlbaP scanslation has replaced it. Yay!

BTW, um, isn't your icon from Oh Dear God? Which I kind of requested people not to make icons from (http://community.livejournal.com/shibusen/481741.html).

seems like I'm also one of those ruthless fans ""orz i'm sorry i've forgot about this rule.

But taking somebody's recap post, mistaking it for a straight translation, and using it to make a scanslation without telling the author of said recap post? That's not forgetfulness, that's pure entitlement and deliberate fail on multiple levels. Totally different.

Also I like how the guy who stole your translation further immersed himself in fail by getting the pages all jumbled.

ah well and here i thought that maybe...JUST maybe the Soul Eater fandom wouldn't be as batshit insane as err some delightfully known fandoms already out there.
I know that is upsetting for you (or it sounds like it) but it's funny, especially since whoever did this KNEW what they were doing!
and now...I...D:<

ARRRRRRRGH NOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Thanks for the heads-up. I'll contact the OneManga admins ASAP and try to get it taken off. I contacted the MangaFox admins yesterday, and unfortunately they haven't done anything yet, but then again it's only been 24 hours.
Still, 24 hours is more than enough time for EPIC FAIL to spread across the internet. As evidenced by, well, this.
Was wondering why that was one of the worst translations I had ever seen (nothing against your recaps, always a fan of those).
Thank you for understanding the difference!!!
--- Edited to add ---
Oh, wait. I just checked the chapters on OneManga, and they aren't copies of the fail!scanslation that used my recap.
Somebody else actually did those. You're right, though, the translation is absolute shit. And there are no credits anywhere in the files.
I suspect that maybe somebody tried to make a translation based on the Spanish version that came out a couple days ago? That would explain why it reads like it's been translated through three different languages. The Spanish version had some pretty glaring errors too, and those same errors are showing up in the OneManga version.
Either that, or somebody's just really bad at reading Japanese.

I don't think 'fail' covers this.

Caught a Glimps
(Anonymous) 2010-02-20 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)Personally I don't care about pirating or the scanlating. People need more dedication like that. However I do think checking a source, or hiring an editor would have been a nicer way to take. In this case the user should have just made a translation request or informed the recapper.
Re: Caught a Glimps
Okay. Thanks for the info. I'm going to go ahead and upload a copy of the super-shitty OlbaP scanslation instead. It's all I have to work with, but I don't care how shitty is it, I just want that damn fail!scanslation off the MangaFox site. I haaaaate having it sitting there with the lovely note tacked on the end implying that I gave my blessing to this steaming pile of failure. I just don't want my name associated with that crap!
Of course this requires me to go through the inconvenience of downloading every single page of chapter 70 from some other read-online site (since it's not available as a zipped download anywhere), registering for a MangaFox account, and then re-upping the stupid chapter to the MangaFox website. Argh. So much extra work, just to get rid of that failure.
In this case the user should have [...] informed the recapper.
No. Like I said in my post, I give no brownie points for being informed after the fact. "I'm using your recap this way, just to let you know!" is every bit as entitled and douchebaggy as not telling me at all.
He should have asked me for permission. He should have asked me before he even started.
And of course, I would have said no, and he would have avoided this horrific embarrassment and epic fail. Then everything would have turned out better for all of us.

Now the only thing left to do is to get if off Megaupload. I can't really do that, though, because ML requires me to submit my full name and RL contact information in order to report a complaint, which I'd rather not do. A couple people posted links to this entry in the forum thread where the ML link is posted. Not that that's stopped people from continuing to download the darn thing and give kudos to the idiot, but it's a start.

Re: OT
I'm planning on getting my degree so I can teach English in Japan.
I'm a bit confuzzled. Do you mean that you're choosing your major based on your goal of teaching in Japan?
Do you want to be teaching in Japan for just a couple years, or do you intend to permanently immigrate? If it's the former, I would say, choose your major based on what you want to do after Japan. If it's the latter, you should get an education degree - but also plan on doing some super-intensive language study, because if you intend to teach long-term in Japan, you may need to invest in getting a graduate degree at a Japanese university.
Re: OT
I have two years till I finish my degree. While moving there forever would be a joy, I know I'd miss my family too much. I'm waffling between accounting (which is my current job), or going all out for a game design degree.
What I was hoping to find out from you was if you had any inside information on the actual experience. What to anticipate upon arrival, things you ended up needing but didn't bring. That sort of thing. ^_^
My deepest apologies,
I've always read your funny recaps of the newest Soul Eater chapters. It was very rude of me to take your translations without asking. I feel very ashamed and WON'T EVER DO IT AGAIN. I swear I learned from this. I'm terribly sorry. And I did credith to you, so I thought it was okay. But it obviously wasn't. So an endless bunch of sorries for you. I'm glad it's now gone from Mangafox and Onemanga. I feel very ashamed now. I'M REALLY REALLY REALLY SORRY.
I feel so ashamed T_T. I really hope you will forgive me.
greets from the stupid and pathetic fangirl who couldn't wait for translations and from now on just waits. And I hope in the future there won't be another one who would do this to you,(But I know you already made that obvious)
Re: OT
The best advice I can give you is to get some education-related experience before you apply to go to Japan. Try volunteering in an ESL classroom, or tutoring ESL students. Having education experience will give you a huge advantage when you apply for most teach-English-in-Japan programs, especially the JET program. I know that JET in particular is looking for teachers first, Japanophiles second. Also, having some experience working with kids will help you know what to expect when you start teaching in Japan. You don't want to walk into a Japanese classroom having never worked with kids before. Trust me, you don't. ;)
As for "inside experience," I don't know if I can help you much. I did the JET program, which has a reputation for being a total crapshoot - and it really, really is. No two people have the same experience doing JET, because individual circumstances very so wildly. You might be teaching high school, middle school, or elementary school. You might live in a village of 200 people out in the middle of nowhere, or you might live in the middle of Tokyo. You might be set up in a gorgeous government-subsidized house all to yourself and not have to pay any rent; you might be holed up in a three-mat apartment that you have to pay hundreds of dollars for every month. You might have fantastic Japanese coworkers. You might not. I will say this, however: Part of the experience is what you make of it. No matter what circumstances you're plopped down in the middle of, your attitude will have the biggest bearing on how much you enjoy your experience. If you're feeling pissy about something, even if you don't voice your complaints, the people around you will still pick up on that - and they will treat you accordingly. If you try your best to be optimistic, however, your coworkers and students will appreciate your positive attitude, and they will in turn extend all sorts of awesome hospitality toward you - inviting you to family events, local festivals, making sure that you're not alone over the New Year holiday, etc.
Hmmm, there was nothing that I ended up needing that I didn't bring with me, not that I can recall. I brought the standard stuff - clothing, deoderant (you can't get decent deoderant in Japan!!), photo albums from home, and pretty much all of the generic stuff that you would find on any "what to pack for Japan" list. I would also recommend investing in a top-of-the-line electronic dictionary at some point - I used mine all the time - but that is something that you can actually buy in Japan with minimal hassle. I never had trouble finding shoes or clothes that fit me while I was in Japan. My mom sent me regular care packages that were basically just deoderant. Once a year she sent me Easter candy too, since they don't celebrate Easter in Japan.
I'm sorry if this isn't very helpful!
Re: My deepest apologies,
I do. It's okay. Thank you for commenting here and for apologizing. I gotta say, this is both very courageous and very classy of you, especially considering the hatefest that we've got going in the comments here.
I also appreciate that you stated exactly the two lessons that I was hoping you (and everybody reading this) would learn, namely that: 1. It is NOT okay to take other people's work without asking them first, and "giving credit" after the fact doesn't make it okay. 2. It's okay to wait for things, especially when you're getting manga for free. Really, it's okay to wait! The whole damn fandom needs to learn more about patience.
In addition I want everyone to know that:
3. My recaps are not direct translations. I don't understand why there's still confusion about this point (not just from you but from a lot of people), although hopefully this incident will help drive that point through more people's skulls. Um, yay for silver linings?
I also apologize for misgendering you. For some reason, I assumed that you were guy, and that was a stupid assumption for me to make.
Anyway, thanks for commenting here, and thank you for your apology. Your apology is most definitely accepted!

You've been incredibly helpful. This gives me a lot to think about. I'm going to look for local teaching programs while I'm working on my degree. Anything to give me a better shot is worth the effort.
Thank you so much!! ^_^

Oh, and I know this is a goofy question, but what's up with Japanese deodorant? Ineffective ingredients, too flowery? Just curious.

I will say this, however: When I was in Japan I commented a couple times about the deoderant thing, and I was always told by some Japanese person, "Oh, we don't really need to use deoderant since Japanese people don't have body odor." Um, having survived three summers in Japan, I would most humbly BEG TO DIFFER, but whatever.

Really, I LOVE Soul Eater and the Fandom was awesome but now it's getting less and less cool. What happened? :( oh wait, it's grown incredibly big now so of course it's bound to happen -_-
*Headdesk*
Well, at least the person understood their mistake and apologized.
