Fate/Stay Night R2 DVD volume 8

While at Yamada Denki yesterday I picked up Fate/Stay Night volume 08 (the final disc in the R2 release). I normally don't buy R2 DVDs, let alone a single volume in a series, but this one came with a freakin' hardcover artbook, so I couldn't resist.

Here's the DVD and book together in their clear slipcase. Sorry for the blurry photo, but the slipcase, it was shiny.

DVD, book, and slipcase separated. The default DVD cover is horizontal (they all are), but it's reversible so you can change that. The book, however, with its horizontal cover, just looks weird when standing up.

Here's the reversible vertical DVD cover, and the collector's card that came with the DVD (yay, Saber!). Since there are only eight DVDs and only eight cards, I was kind of hoping that the backs of the cards would have parts of a giant picture, so that when you put all eight cards together you get a giant picture of something-or-other. It's a neat gimmick and I've seen a lot of DVD releases do it, but unfortunately the Fate cards have boring and generic backs. Still, that's a lovely screenshot of Saber, though. I would have preferred some artwork/illustration over a screenshot from the series, but whatever.

And here are some quick photos of the book. It's quite thick, about 100 pages, all glossy and full-color. The book contains character designs, the standard screenshot-filled-recaps of each episode, interviews with creators and voice actors, and huge sections of doujinshi artwork from both people involved in the series and famous fans. Interspersed throughout are illustrations ripped from Newtype and Megami and other magazines, but it's by no means a complete selection. (But if you want the complete collection of Fate/Stay Night magazine and poster illustrations, there's already a beautiful and cheap artbook for that.)

All in all, for an impulse buy, I'm definitely glad that I made this purchase. I don't plan on buying any other R2 Fate DVDs, especially since the R1 release is due to begin in December. (If the R1 artbox doesn't have the same kick-arse artwork as the R2 artbox, however, I may just talk myself into buying R2 volume 01 anyway.)
