More Eternal Song
Another three months, and another chapter of Eternal Song, the prequel manga for Shakugan no Shana.
Only thirteen pages. What the hell.
So, in this chapter: Nothing happens, except that Mathilde is determined to take down Merihim. But Merihim is in love with Mathilde. Wilhelmina is in love with Merihim. WOE AND ANGST. The characters stand around and talk about their woe and angst for thirteen pages, in between a little bit of paltry ass-kicking by Mathilde:

Now, this being the Shana PREQUEL, we already know how this love triangle is going to be resolved - with Mathilde dead, Merihim basically dead (or at least depowered), and Wilhelmina left alone.
Which is why I'm surprised to find that this manga is dumping us in the middle of the love triangle already in progress. When I read the first two chapters, I thought that we were finally going to get the story of how a Crimson Lord fell in love with a Flame Haze, and how another Flame Haze fell in love with the same Crimson Lord. Because if you ask me, that's a MUCH more interesting story than "how it all ended." I mean, we KNOW how it ended - we got that story in Shakugan no Shana, basically - which is why I think that the lead-up would have been a more interesting tale to explore.
But no. The character dialogue in this chapter reveals that the love triangle is already well-established, or at least the part where Wilhelmina loves Merihim, however that happened. So now all that's left, basically, is for the remaining members of the Toten Glocke to be defeated (two down and seven to go), and for Mathilde to die. Yawn. How boring.

And I still have no idea who the heck this Sokar dude is or why he matters, or why we wasted the entire previous chapter on him fighting an evil tree. Whoever he is, I suspect that he's basically cannon fodder at this point. But whatever. I'm just glad to have a new chapter which actually stars the two main characters, instead of this Sokar Whasshiface.
Remember how I called this first chapter "the single most awesome manga that I have read this year"? Yeah, I take that back. The first chapter was wonderful, absolutely pitch-perfect in any way. But the following two chapters have basically sent this entire series to the crapper. Not even the gorgeous artwork can really save it now.
But, we'll see. Three more months until the next chapter! Maybe things will pick up then.
