Not understanding how that could have happened, they use Skuld's machine to playback Belldandy's memory, and discover that Marller's at fault! They decide to turn to Heaven to clear up the mess, but...

Now, wait a minute, didn't Animedia magazine reveal this spoiler (Belldandy with the red MA on her forehead) two months ago? Yes, they did. Also, the anime has been building up to "Belldandy-as-a-demon" for some time, starting from the very first time that Hild appeared. Especially in episode 18, when Hild went off on this mini-monologue about how fascinated she is by the fact that Belldandy "has no dark side" and gives this eeeevil smile that hints at how much she would like to test the boundaries of Belldandy's goodness.
