This week's Tsubasa: Chapter 217
Y'know... Just when I thought that it couldn't get any worse, just when I thought that there couldn't possibly be any more monkey wrenches left for CLAMP to throw into this complete clusterfuck of an ending...
I'm proven wrong, yet again.
That pic pretty much says it all, and then some.
So!
The chapter opens with the exact same scene that we just saw in last week's xxxHolic, with Watanuki suddenly having a random vision of the Sakura/Sakura/Syaoran/Syaoran foursome floating in the black void. "These people..." Watanuki says.
Tsubasa!Syaoran looks at other!Syaoran and other!Sakura and says, "Sakura... No... Mother... and Father...?"
Yes, Syaoran. Your mother and your father look exactly like you and your girlfriend, right down to being the exact same age and wearing the exact same clothing. No wonder Syaoran looks COMPLETELY HORRIFIED in this panel.
We feel your pain, Syaoran. We feel it.
Other!Sakura turns to Watanuki, and repeats the same line she spoke in last week's xxxHolic: "It will be all right."
Ihate love the way that CLAMP had to devote an entire two-page spread to a closeup of Sakura's face as she delivers this one single line. They did the exact same thing in xxxHolic last week, too.
But unlike what happened in xxxHolic, this time, Sakura continues her speech. "...That's what she said to me. The one whom I met in my dream, the one who lent me her power. A girl whose existence is the same as mine, but who was born in a different world."
Oh hey look we finally get to see adult!Sakura's face and WHOA HEY WAIT A MINUTE--

So this whole time, parent!Sakura and parent!Syaoran weren't CCS!Sakura and CCS!Syaoran?! They weren't?!
My first instinct is to be relieved, actually, that my beloved CCS!Sakura and CCS!Syaoran have in fact NOT been tainted by the bullshit that is Tsubasa. It's nice to know that they DIDN'T end up spawning an Oedipal clone of son, abandoning the changeling (Watanuki) who replaced him, then age-regressing/time-warping themselves into the Doom Tube for whatever incomprehensible reason.
But at the same time I can't say that the CCS!universe is completely untainted by this asshattery, however, since CCS!Sakura is clearly involved somehow, and possibly CCS!Touya and CCS!Yukito were as well.
Oh, by the way, for those of you keeping track at home... Yes, this is officially the fifth - or fourth, depending on how you count them - Sakura in this series so far.
Five Sakura. Count 'em. Five.
Goddammit, CLAMP.
Anyway, moving on. CCS!Sakura gives adult!Sakura her wand and says, "This is your treasure, isn't it?"
CCS!Sakura adds, "Even without my wand, my cards will always be together with me. That's why you, too - You'll definitely be all right!"
Back to the present! Other!Syaoran shouts at Oedipal!Syaoran, "This is all so that YOU can choose your own future!"
Then we see that AW YEAH KICKASS!!! Syaoran's magic circle and Sakura's magic circle are overlapping beneath their feet.
But then, BOOM! Random swirls of magic start exploding and throwing everyone around. I guess. Fay, Mokona, and Kurogane are thrown back. Parent!Syaoran grabs son!Syaoran. Parent!Sakura grabs dead!Sakura and protects her from the... whatever... while staring at Syaoran with a determined look on her face.
Fay's like, trying to do magic, or something, but it appears to not be working out very well for him. OR IS IT?! Suddenly, all of our heroes are floating within magical protective bubbles, while the world around them completely goes to shit:
So at first Mokona and Kurogane are like, "WTF?!" But then Fay shouts at them, "Don't! Don't leave this shield!"
They are floating above FWR, who does *not* have a magical bubble to protect him from... whatever is going on. FWR snarls up at Fay, "You meddling fool!!" Looking rather bloody and desperate, FWR starts to form a fireball in his hands.
Parent!Sakura, still cradling dead!Sakura in her arms, glares down at him defiantly. "We won't let you--"
"--Break apart these worlds!" Parent!Syaoran finishes.
And then the artwork goes crazy for the last two pages, and I have no idea WTF just happened. No idea. Seriously, can you guys tell me what's going on here?:
Hmmm, looks like the world just up and broke apart anyway. Way to go, fail!Sakura and fail!Syaoran. Way to go.
