Oh man, does anybody have the source for this?

My absentee ballot arrived yesterday! (*throws confetti*)

The first issue of SuperGrrrl Adventure Comix arrived today! And it is very sparkly and awesome, and I am shamelessly curling up with it right now instead of a) writing my grad school application essays, which I really should be doing or b) catching up on KHMK, which is usually my procrastionation of choice. And y'all should order your own copy because seriously, you guys, it is really awesome.

In other news, I learned how to make cakes and breads in my rice cooker yesterday. I cannot WAIT to try out Erika's chocolate-walnut cake recipe tomorrow. It's been so long since I was able to bake anything... (*sigh*) I do miss living in a country where ovens come standard in every household. In Japan, having your own oven is an exceptional luxury.

I hated grad school essays with a fiery passion. Mostly because I'm sure nobody read them. Academia makes me so cynical.

I know how you feel! My oven broke down AGES ago and nobody thought it worth it to get it fixed, or get a new one. Cake and muffins were my specialty when I was 10. :D

Yes, it's been that long. (We could afford it, but nobody thought it was WORTH it to spend $500 on a new oven just so a kid could bake cakes. And I can see their point. Yeah, my family doesn't bake much.)

But we have a rice cooker...You can bake cakes in that? Boy, I'll have to find out how.

Yes, you can!

I already knew that you could use a rice cooker as a vegetable steamer and as a crock pot, but apparently they also function as miniature ovens as well. Granted, it takes about four hours for it to bake a cake all the way through, but it *does* work!

Basic cake-baking method:

* Grease inside of rice cooker with butter
* Make cake batter
* Pour into rice cooker
* Press "cook" or whatever your equivalent setting is. When the "cook" setting is finished, keep your rice cooker on "warm" until the cake is done. Depending on your rice cooker, this could take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours.
* Test the cake with a chopstick inserted on top. If the chopstick comes out clean, your cake is done.
* Turn off the rice cooker and let it cool before your remove the cake.
* Cut off the bottom of the cake, as it will be burnt.

And voila! Cake!

Yeah, one of these days, I should start experimenting with my rice cooker. So far, the only non-rice dish that I make is lentils.
