This week's Tsubasa - Chapter 199

Oh hey look, another Kurogane/Fay cameo. Thank God. Now let's hope this becomes a pattern.

The chapter opens with Kurogane thinking about his parents. "A wish... Well, everybody wishes to not lose their loved ones," he says. FWR, Kurogane has declared you UNORIGINAL. Thus spaketh Kurogane. Oh burn. Buuuuurrrrrrrnnnnnn.

Fay pipes in, "But that's an impossible wish." Mercifully, we are spared a flashback to Fay's trainwreck of a past. Oh no wait, there's his brother in the bottom of the panel with Kurogane's flashback. Crap.

Mokona adds, "It would just be sad if your beloved person came back." Yeah, "sad" like Pet Cemetary sad. "Sad" as in UNIMAGINABLY HORRIBLE.

BTW, Mokona's beloved person is apparently Clow Reed, as that's the person that Mokona's thinking of when s/he (??) speaks. Awwww.

Edit: Oh hey I am dyslexic. (No, really.) I read hoshii as kanashii. So apparently the Mokona panel is NOT Mokona in the present thinking about Clow Reed, but actually a self-contained flashback in which past!Mokona says to Clow Reed (is he literally there, or just a memory?), "I want you to come back... You're my beloved person." Argh confusing panel layout and break of the narrative flow. Anyway. Moving on.

Syaoran goes on to explain that the King and Queen decided together not to tell Sakura about the seal on her. Only Syaoran and Nadeshiko could see the seal, anyway. Syaoran says that he spent many, many years searching for a way to remove the black wings from Sakura.

Flashback starts again! Only this time Syaoran is a teenager, just like he was in the first chapter of the manga. Syaoran apparently has a home in the village now, and is dressed exactly as he was in the first chapter of the manga. He appears to be coming home from a long journey. He enters his house, takes off his cloak, and addresses a photograph of his parents: "Mom, Dad, I'm home."

CLAMP has hidden the heads of Syaoran's parents from view.

Syaoran think-bubbles at the photograph. "I heard that there was a country where the people used magic that resembled the black wings, so I went to check it out. But I still couldn't find a way to help Sakura. Again. I couldn't find a single clue."

Suddenly, someone is at the door. It's teenage!Sakura. And she's dressed exactly like she was in the first chapter of the manga. And she immediately begins pestering Syaoran exactly like she did in the first chapter of the manga: "Syaoran!! How was your trip? Did you get hurt? You didn't get sick or anything, did you?!"

The next scene plays out eerily like the first chapter of the manga. Syaoran tries to address Sakura as "hime" but she corrects him, insisting that he call her "Sakura," since she calls him "Syaoran."

Syaoran offers Sakura cookies that he made himself, from "a fruit that resembles Clow Country's apples" in his travels. Sakura compliments Syaoran on being such a good cook. Sakura says that she was worried when, two years into his stay in Clow Country, Syaoran had insisted on moving out and living on his own. But he had turned out perfectly fine!

Wait a minute... Two years after Syaoran arrived in Clow Country... Oh my God. They let him move out on his own when he was only nine years old?!

Sakura speculates that Syaoran's father, who taught him how to cook, must have been a good cook too. Syaoran says that his mother could cook too, but his father was always the more talented chef.

LOL.

Syaoran think-bubbles that perhaps, if his father knew that they were going to be parted, that would explain why his father rushed to teach him so much so early in life - everything from cooking to how to use magic.

Another flashback to Syaoran's father, again with his face concealed. But he's clearly wearing Chinese-styled, CCS!Syaoran-esque clothing.

Syaoran and Sakura shoot the breeze some more, then Sakura gets all blushy and starts to say, "Um.... So, um, Syaoran, I... I really--"

Suddenly the palace bell rings, signaling that it's time for Sakura to return home. Sakura pouts and says, "It's like nii-sama is deliberately interfering with me." She turns to leave, then stops and tells Syaoran, "Hey, it'll be my birthday soon. There's something that I wanted to say to you, but.... I'll tell you on my birthday, okay?"

Syaoran watches her leave, and notices that the black wings have almost grown large enough to completely envelop her body.
