I actually don't hate Brave. It's pretty far from being my least favorite Pixar film (that would probably be
A Bug's Life
). I really do like it a lot, just
not as a feminist movie.
I just hate how everything that Eleanor valued and thus that the movie presented as representative of traditional femininity (responsibility, consideration for others, music, art, cleanliness, self-restraint) was presented as INHERENTLY BAD AND OPPRESSIVE. And how at the end of the movie she was shown to be so much happier when she just totally changed who she was. It was just... wow, movie. Wow. There could have been a feminist message in there about how women are always expected to to live their lives for others, be subservient, and never pursue their own goals. But that's really not what the movie ended up going for at all.
